The Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department will hold its open house on October 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fire Station located at 640 County Route 20. Seasonal Refreshments will be served.

With new leadership in place in the Pulaski Academy and Central School District, the community recently had a chance to meet the new superintendent and chat with him about his experience in education and the qualities he brings to the district. Brian Hartwell, who began his service as superintendent in August, said the Pulaski community has welcomed him with open arms.

Salmon River Alpacas of Pulaski will be among competitors from across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions at the 2014 nationally-certified Empire Alpaca Extravaganza at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse on October 25-26.

It may have been after school hours, but the hallways of Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School were bottlenecked Sept. 30 as hundreds of parents, students and teachers showed up for the school’s universal pre-kindergarten to second-grade open house.

On September 26, the Zonta Club of Oswego honored Diane Cooper-Currier, executive director of Oswego County Opportunities, with its prestigious Amelia Earhart Woman of Achievement Award. Event co-chair Kristine Bushey noted how special the evening was. “This dinner is our spotlight event for the Zonta Club of Oswego. We relish the opportunity to pay tribute to a woman who works so hard to improve the lives of families in our community,” she said.

The Oswego County Legislature’s Human Services Committee recognized Kara Weiss with the 2014 “Paul Santore Award for Outstanding Youth.” She is a member of the board of directors of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau; the student/youth representative on the Oswego School Board and has participated in the Oswego City Youth Court Program for five years; completing more than 30 cases and more than 80 community service hours.

Quirk’s Players of G. Ray Bodley High School will be sponsoring a chicken barbeque dinner Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fulton Polish Home, 153 W. First St. The dinner will feature a delicious meal prepared by Fricken Chicken. Patrons may choose to dine in at the Polish Home or take their dinners to go. Inside there will be gift baskets, music and a table of sweet treats to enjoy.

CNY Arts staff will hold office hours in the County Office Building in Oswego Oct. 3 and Oct. 17 to provide technical assistance to local artists and arts, cultural and heritage tourism organizations. Matthew DeBellas, marketing director for CNY Arts, said staff members will be available from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 3 and Oct. 17 in Conference Room C on the fourth floor of the County Office Building at 46 E. Bridge St.

The Oswego Fire Department will be hosting an open house this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Side Fire Station, 35 E. Cayuga St. There will be live demonstrations, tours, blood pressure checks, smoke detector installation appointments, refreshments and more.
