Volney Elementary School recognized March as perseverance month and welcomed a special visit by a local man who knows exactly what it means to persevere. Eight years ago, Greg Callen survived a tragic accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down and bound to a wheelchair.
American Legion Post 601 raised more than $1,900 for Pleasant Lawn, Bidwell Cemetery associations recently. The chicken BBQ was a huge success. It officially started at noon and was sold out by 12:30 p.m.

SUNY Oswego meteorology faculty member Scott Steiger and students next winter will study lake-effect snow very up close and personal thanks to $320,000 in grant funds from the National Science Foundation and an armada of instrument-loaded vehicles, including an airplane to fly into the teeth of the storms.

The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County’s annual Children’s Book Drive received some welcome support recently when the Wal-Mart Super Center, Route 3 in Granby, announced that it would be hosting a book drive on April 27. Wal-Mart employees will be accepting donations of new and gently used books with titles of interest to toddlers through teens.
Assemblyman Will Barclay will host an American Red Cross blood drive on May 3 at the Elks Lodge in Oswego. “The Red Cross does so much good in providing blood for emergency rooms and hospitals throughout our region, which saves lives every day. I’m happy to dedicate a day to help the local chapter find more donors,” said Barclay.
State Senator Patty Ritchie will honor 16 Central and Northern New York women who were nominated for the New York State Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program at a special event, taking place in Watertown on Thursday at the Flower Memorial Library at 6 p.m.
Softball Registrations for the 2013 Summer Season are now being accepted at the City Clerk’s office in the Municipal Building, Fulton. Rosters, schedules and rules are also available at this location. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
