OCB Adult Education Expands Health Occupation Course Offerings

Oswego County BOCES Adult Education Certified Medical Assistant instructor Shelly Spencer demonstrates to students in her program how to administer an electrocardiogram (EKG) during a recent class. She is pictured above talking with students Ashlie Knopp, left foreground, and Holly Berry about how to evaluate and interpret the data from an EKG graph. Serving as the patient for the exercise was Certified Medical Assistant student Jeff Hopp. Students who complete the Certified Medical Assistant program at Oswego County BOCES are eligible to sit for the certification exams for Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Electrocardiogram Technician, Coding Specialist and Administrative Health Assistant offered through the National Association of Health Professionals.The Oswego County BOCES (OCB) Adult Education department has expanded their course offerings to include the following two new health occupation related courses: Dental Office Receptionist and Certified Administrative Health Assistant.

Jason Krause shows off his trademark softball swing.This year’s picnic, attended by nearly 400 people, featured a variety of games, including softball, water relay, 3-legged race, egg toss, water balloon toss, ring toss, guess how many pennies, a bubble station and more.

Jayden Nolan enjoys a book with classroom aide Amber Jolly at Oswego County Head Start Pre-K’s Cleveland Center.  Head Start Pre-K is still accepting applications for enrollment.  For more information or to apply families may call 598-4711 or 1-800-359-1171.Head Start Pre-K continues to accept applications for enrollment. Head Start is a quality pre-k program that enrolls 3- and 4-year-old children at no cost to families. The program’s primary goal is promoting school readiness through the development of social and cognitive skills.

Sunrise Rotarians Meet Youth Leadership Award Winner

At a recent Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club Meeting, Rotarian Ellen Nowyj, left, introduced  Alex Bateman, a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) recipient for 2011.  RYLA is Rotary's leadership program for young people and emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal growth.  Speakers at the Conference at Cazenovia College in July encouraged the recipients to work with their peers in their Senior year of high school  to develop a year-long work project to be presented to the Sunrise Rotary Club at the end of the year.  Also pictured is Alex's mom, Peggy. At a recent Sunrise Rotary meeting, Rotarian Ro Kemmis, left, introduced Pamela Natoli.  Pam is employed by “Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure” out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a   Compliance Specialist whose primary work is environmental compliance audits and most recently soil remediation. She has been working with the company since 2007.
