Children Eat for Free This Summer; USDA, YMCA, OCSD Conduct Effort

The USDA, Oswego YMCA and the Oswego City School District School Lunch program have combined for a summer food program providing free breakfast and lunch to children under the age of 18. Jackie Sheffield of the YMCA, Vanessa Sheffield (YMCA Welcome Center staff member) and Oswego City School District School Lunch Director Dennis Jerome kicked off the summer.

“Food that’s in when school is out” is the theme of this summer’s effort to provide a healthy breakfast and lunch to teenagers and youngsters  18 years of age and under.

Office For The Aging Will Distribute Farmers’ Market Coupon Booklets To Seniors

The value of the booklets is $20. All persons aged 60 and over whose gross income is at or below 185 percent of federal poverty guidelines ($1,679 monthly for a single person or $2,268 monthly for a married couple) are eligible to participate in the program.

REACH CNY, OCO Host Baby Shower

Mothers and expectant mothers in OCO’s WIC program were recently the special guests at a Community Baby Shower. Standing from left are, event facilitator, Kathleen Hayden of REACH CNY, Christin, Heather, Kelly, Chelsea, Karee, Kristin, Cecil, Leo, and Glorimil. Seated from left are, Crystal w/ Taylor, Candace w/ Ellie, and Jenna. Seated on the floor is Kim Kelley, CLC with OCO’s WIC program.

Facilitated by Kathleen Hayden of REACH CNY, the shower featured an enlightening presentation regarding the expectations of motherhood and the benefits of breastfeeding. Kim Kelley, certified lactation counselor with OCO’s WIC program, said that the event was a perfect compliment to the efforts of the program’s peer counselors.

Alliance Bank To Sponsor Catholic Charities Volleyball Fundraiser

Alliance Bank has signed on as a major sponsor for Catholic Charities’ Second Annual Co-ed Volleyball Tournament. From left are Jolene Bechtel of Alliance Bank; Gail Cooper, tournament chair; and Barbara Bateman, senior vice president, regional executive with Alliance Bank.

Scheduled for Aug. 13 and 14, Catholic Charities of Oswego County’s Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament serves as a fundraiser for the agency’s food pantry and CYO program.

Exhibition to Feature Works of Students Attending State Summer School of the Arts

The oil-on-canvas "Full Moon" by Kate Timm, who manages educational media for SUNY Oswego's art department, will join the visual arts works of other SUNY Oswego faculty and professional staff July 5 to 29 in Tyler Hall Art Gallery's south wing. The display will be open by appointment at 312-2113 or 312-2112; it is intended as a companion exhibition to a July 29 display of media arts works of students attending the New York State Summer School of the Arts. A free public viewing of both exhibitions will take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 29.SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery and Waterman Theatre will display for the public on Friday, July 29, media arts pieces of students attending the New York State Summer School of the Arts at the college.

Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Board of Education Presents Rebel Spirit Award to Grant Decker

The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Board of Education presented Grant Decker with the Rebel Spirit Award during the 2011 Varsity Sports Awards Banquet. The BOE established the Rebel Spirit Award as a way to acknowledge and recognize individuals or groups who, through their own actions, demonstrate outstanding effort and leadership in the display of Rebel pride and spirit, in school or through community efforts. A long-standing coach for the APW School District, Decker was selected for helping to instill in APW youth a sense of leadership, pride and discipline. APW BOE member Ernie Peters spoke during the award’s presentation ceremony about Decker’s loyalty to the APW School District, about his ability to motivate students and shared one of his favorite Grant Decker quotes: “If you don’t have discipline, you don’t have anything.” Decker is pictured above with, from left to right: current BOE members Ernie Peters and Marie Radley, past BOE member Elmer Plantz, APW Athletic Director Bert Conklin, BOE president Michael Hale, Sr., and APW Superintendent of Schools Gerry Hudson.
