Art Auction to Benefit Three SUNY Oswego Student Groups

This piece by Richard Zakin, a professor emeritus in art for SUNY  Oswego and a noted expert in ceramics, is one of several donated by  college faculty and students for a fundraising art auction at 6 p.m.  Thursday, April 1. The auction will benefit three student art  organizations -- Arts Alive!, Break Thru Design and the Student Art  Exhibition Committee.Faculty and students have donated work in a variety of media for the fundraiser for student groups Arts Alive!, Break Thru Design and Student Art Exhibition Committee.

SUNY Oswego Students Honored for One-act Plays

Scriptwriter Kimberly Saunders, seated second from right, a SUNY  Oswego senior creative writing major, works with a student director,  Aaron Londraville, second from left, senior theatre major, to rehearse  an upcoming staged reading of her 10-page play, "Oh, Life,"  one of six winning entries in the college's annual New Voices  competition sponsored by the theatre and the English and creative  writing departments. Saunders, whose one-act plays have been among the  winners each of her four years on campus, also works with actors Adam  Matta, left, junior graphic design major; Jake Luria, standing,  sophomore theatre major; Jaclyn Mienkiewicz, standing, sophomore theatre  major; and Katie Reid, right, junior theatre major. Top one-act plays of six SUNY Oswego student scriptwriters — including rare four-time winner Kimberly Ann Saunders — will appear in the “New Voices” staged readings at 7 p.m. March 27 and 28 in Tyler Hall’s lab theatre.

Professor’s Entrepreneur Project Aims to Stem Extremism in Pakistan

Sarfraz Mian, professor in SUNY Oswego's School of Business,  travels to his native Pakistan frequently to lobby universities, the  government and the U.S. Agency for International Development on behalf  of improving education, aid and innovative ideas to build the  entrepreneurial spirit in the strategically important Middle Eastern  nation. SUNY Oswego’s Sarfraz Mian sees a future for Pakistan without extremist violence like the two suicide bombings March 12 that killed 45 people on their way to Friday afternoon congregational prayers in Lahore, the city of Mian’s birth.

SUNY Oswego Professor’s WRVO Series to Spotlight Immigration

WRVO National Public Radio gears up to offer segments on  immigration in May, as Jessica Hester, assistant professor of theatre at  SUNY Oswego, tapes an interview March 11 with Frank London, a member of  the musical group the Klezmatics. London's band, which performed on  campus March 10, specializes in klezmer, music that draws on centuries  of Jewish tradition and history, including the Jewish Diaspora, the  dispersion of the Jewish people over many centuries. Five- or six-minute  segments will air during the morning drive, said Fred Vigeant, WRVO's  program director.Jessica Hester, assistant professor of theatre at SUNY Oswego, wants to shed light where, too often, there is misunderstanding and mistrust: immigration.
