Local merchants and community members alike come together in support of the upcoming “Love Our Lighthouse Day,” an event being held by the H. Lee White Maritime Museum. The goal of this day dedicated to Oswego’s beloved lighthouse is to re-ignite the spark with which residents once acclaimed the former protector of Oswego’s shores.
Area mayors and elected officials donned their March for Meals hats and showed their support for OCO’s Meals on Wheels program during OCO’s Community Champions Week. Community leaders and members of OCO’s administration department also participated as community champions helped deliver meals to home bound seniors in Oswego County.
Each year, in cooperation with law enforcement agencies across the state, the Oswego City Police Department participates in Operation Safe Stop which is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, The New York State Association for Pupil Transportation, and the New York State School Bus Contractor’s Association.
Assemblyman Will Barclay and members of the Rural Health Network of Oswego County are teaming up to host a blood drive on May 1. “Giving blood truly saves lives. In fact, one donation can save up to three lives. Anyone who experiences a health problem like cancer or a heart transplant needs blood transfusions. Hospitals are in critical need of blood for emergency rooms throughout our region,” said Barclay.

Move Along, Inc. representatives were on hand at Kingsford Park Elementary School in Oswego recently to demonstrate to students several programs that build awareness for adaptive sports. The all-day event, which was held during the physical education classes, also included a 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball tournament and “penny war” fundraiser.
During “Safe Stop,” police officers are in marked patrol units enforcing the New York State Traffic Law which requires all vehicles to stop for stopped school busses with their red lights flashing.
The Oswego County Legislature’s Economic Development and Planning Committee presented a certificate to Tim Carroll, chairman of the Oswego County Environmental Management Council, designating April 22 to 28 as Earth Week 2015.
New York Sea Grant now has two additional extension staff ready to help Great Lakes region residents and community leaders deal with coastal processes and hazards and develop Watercraft Inspection Steward programs.
Mexico students excitedly waited in line to get the autograph of former NASA astronaut Story Musgrave at a recent STEM presentation held at the Mexico Middle School. 80-year-old Musgrave is the perfect example of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) applied in life.
