First United Church of Fulton Offers Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Financial donations and volunteer help are needed for this year’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner to be held on Thursday, November 23 from noon until 2:00 p.m. at First United Church of Fulton at 33 South Third Street in Fulton. The free sit down dinner is open to everyone, and features a complete Thanksgiving Dinner and an opportunity for good food and fellowship.

Fulton Family Grows By Five After National Adoption Day

Overseen by judges of the Fifth Judicial District of the New York State Unified Court System and Onondaga County Executive Joannie Mahoney, dozens of local families took their turn to welcome new additions with official adoption finalization proceedings at Syracuse’s 17th Annual National Adoption Day. For one Fulton family, this meant celebrating five children officially welcomed to the Hotchkiss family. Esperanza Hotchkiss, 28, had been fostering two sets of siblings ranging in age from three to 12 and on Friday (Nov 17) she officially took them in as her own.

Merlino Tops Avery in Fifth Ward With Absentee Ballots

A tight election race in Fulton for the seat representing the city’s fifth ward on the Common Council has been resolved as absentee ballots have now been counted. After election day, (November 7) the unofficial results showed both newcomer candidates in a race too close to call with Audrey Avery (REP) leading Dennis Merlino (DEM) 163 votes to 160 votes, respectively. With such a close margin, absentee votes would determine the final outcome. The final count showed that the unofficial results revealed Dennis Merlino had come from behind in the polls to win the ward with 179 votes to Avery’s 170 votes.

Fulton Officials Hopeful 2018 Budget Will Bring No Tax Increase

Fulton officials are currently projecting a 0.5 percent tax increase for the 2018 city budget, however, many are hopeful it can be further reduced to zero increase at all. In an introductory budget discussion, the Fulton Common Council was presented the 2018 budget as it currently stands. Members of the common council will take time to review the budget in its entirety and bring forth any suggestions or concerns they may have before the final draft goes in front of the community at a public hearing.

Fulton Honors the Nation’s Protectors at Veterans Day Ceremony

A bitter cold didn’t stop dozens of veterans and community members from braving the below freezing temperatures to attend the Fulton Veterans Council’s annual Veterans Day ceremony. Across from Fulton City Hall, President of the Fulton Veterans Council Garry Visconti led a 45-minute ceremony to honor veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr., city councilors, county legislators, members of the Fulton Fire and Police departments, several hometown veterans and local veterans organizations, and dozens of devoted community members braved the cold as a small token of appreciation in honoring our nation’s veterans. Father Fuchs, a World War II veteran, opened the ceremony in prayer and a reminder that today, November 11, 2017, marks 99 years to the day from the ending of the Great War, more commonly referred to as World War I.

Catholic Charities Showcases New Fulton Location

A generous donation has allowed Catholic Charities of Oswego County in Fulton to upgrade to an 80,000-square foot building, a growth of nearly 50,000 square feet from its previous location. Originally founded in the 1930s as an adoption agency, Catholic Charities has since evolved into a mid-sized human service agency to serve families, children, and adults throughout Oswego County and in the past two years have doubled their staff and have worked to meet increasing needs. The new location at 808 W. Broadway was donated by Michael Falcone and family, a family very involved with the Syracuse Diocese and giving back to the community. Supervisors and staff beamed with gratefulness and pride as they unveiled the new location.

Fulton Man Facing Rape, Several Other Charges

Gary Melvin Goodale, of Fulton, was arrested after an investigation by the Fulton Police Department and charged with first-degree rape as well as other charges. He is alleged to have had sexual intercourse, physical sexual contact and sexual contact with a foreign object with an eight-year-old girl. It also alleged that he had physical sexual contact, oral sexual contact with a nine-year-old boy as well as physical sexual contact with an eight-year-old boy.

Fulton: Unofficial Election Results Show Tight Race in Fifth Ward, Castiglia Retains County Legislature Seat

As polls have closed across Oswego County, unofficial results show a three vote difference between candidates in Fulton’s Fifth Ward and Frank Castiglia Jr. retaining his seat as the 25th District Oswego County legislator. Fifth Ward for the Fulton Common Council and the 25th District of Oswego County Legislature covering a portion of Fulton were the only two contested races relative to the city.
