Restored Hannibal Sports Bring Back Discussion of What Was Not Restored

On the recommendation of interim Superintendent of Schools Pete Backus, the board voted to restore JV-level boys and girls basketball, girls volleyball and wrestling.  The vote was 4-2, with one abstention.

Backus explained that the sports are being restored with a portion of an expected grant of state pork barrel funds from State Sen. Patty Ritchie.

Animal Cruelty Complaint Leads to Palermo Man’s Arrest

The Palermo man who became an everyday presence at the child endangerment trial of Erin Maxwell has been charged with endangering his own child and a family pet.

State Police report that a person called to say that Steven D. Burdick, 45, of 4102 Route 3, Palermo, had a dog tied up in his front yard that had been hit by a vehicle the night before.

Phoenix Football Player Dies After Injury Suffered During Game

Ridge Barden, in a photo released by the Phoenix Central School District.A Phoenix high school football player died Friday evening after suffering an injury during his team’s game at Homer high school.

Ridge Barden, 16 and a junior, died after suffering what the school district describes as a head injury in the third quarter of the Firebirds’ Friday night game at Homer. He was taken by ambulance from the field to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

New Huhtamaki Contract Holds Pay Hikes, Keeps Benefits Intact

A long, tense period is over for Fulton’s largest private employer, as workers at Huhtamaki approved a new 3 year contract Thursday.

The contract, which is retroactive to February when the old contract expired, contains modest pay increases and maintains medical and pension benefits, according to Richard Knowles of the United Steelworkers Union.
