Kristina Rathbun was going to quit school. A straight A student whose grades sank because of problems with other students, she thought the only alternative was to leave. Instead, she landed in a little-known district program for students with poor grades, attendance or behavior. She and many of the nearly two dozen other students in the program are in the midst of remarkable turnarounds.

Hannibal came together this past weekend for Winterfest, a weekend of outdoors activities designed to make the best of the harshest weather of the year. Lots of folks showed up for a variety of contests, food and music.

When the weather outside turns frightful, the people of Hannibal go outdoors. Hannibal Winterfest takes place this weekend at Kenney Middle School and the Hannibal Municipal Building next door. Human dogsled races, as you see in the photo above, are only part of the fun. There are lots of outdoor events and indoor events for those who need a break from the weather. Click inside to see the entire schedule of events.
A volunteer firefighter in Phoenix has been arrested and accused of stealing cans of gasoline from the fire department.
Matthew J. Fratello, 25, of 22 Maplehurst Dr., Phoenix was charged by Phoenix village police with two misdemeanors: petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He was released on an appearance ticket and has resigned from the fire department.
The department alleges that on February 24, 2009, someone stole the personal checks of another person. Within a month, six of the stolen checks had been cashed at local banks.
