Trinity Catholic School, as one of 22 Catholic schools within the Diocese of Syracuse, will once again celebrate Catholic Schools Week, January 28 – February 3. Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, said Barbara Sugar, principal. On a designated day during Catholic Schools Week, schools in all four regions of the diocese will focus on giving back to their communities.

Senate Votes To Protect Taxpayers From $1.5 Billion ‘Hidden’ State Tax Hike

State Senator Patty Ritchie today (Jan. 23) voted for legislation that would block a hidden, $1.5 billion hike in state tax bills affecting nearly every single New York taxpayer as a result of recent changes to the federal tax code. It would allow New Yorkers to continue to claim tax-saving deductions on their state returns, including allowing full deductions for school and property taxes, medical expenses and charitable contributions.

Empire State Snowshoe Championship Race and Stone Wall Snowshoe Walk/Run Set Jan. 28

The Winona Forest Recreation Association kicks off its season of winter events Jan. 28 with the Empire State Snowshoe Championship Race and the Stone Wall 5K Walk/Run through the sprawling 9,000-acre state forest in northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties. “The Winona Stone Wall has evolved into one of the Northeast’s premier snowshoe events,” said race director Rich Shumway.

Park Fees, Sea Cadets’ Request Tabled

At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council tabled a pair of resolutions until they could get some more information. The DPW commissioner’s request to set a fee schedule for use of Breitbeck Park (non-pavilion area) for weddings and the Sea Cadets’ request to use the McCrobie Civic Center on certain dates for drills were both pulled from Monday night’s agenda.

Child Advocacy Center Has New Home, Old Problem

Located at 163 S. First St. in Fulton, with a satellite office at 4822 Salina St. in Pulaski, the CAC of Oswego County is a non-profit charitable organization that works to protect and serve children that are victims of sexual and physical abuse. They have been seeing an increase in the number of cases in recent years. The director attributes that to the good work of area law enforcement and several other agencies; it doesn’t necessarily mean there is more abuse in the county than elsewhere, she pointed out.
