As you know, Oswego County is home to three of the state’s six nuclear power plants – James A. FitzPatrick and Nine Mile Point I and II. Nuclear generation is engrained in our history and a big part of who we are in Oswego County.
U.S. Representative John Katko delivered testimony Tuesday (May 24) at a legislative hearing held by the House Committee on Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands in support of legislation that he has introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives which would advance the designation of Fort Ontario and the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum in Oswego to National Park status.
State Senator Patty Ritchie called for New York State to preserve nuclear energy and protect the FitzPatrick Nuclear Plant in a letter to the Public Service Commission delivered as part of a public hearing held in Oswego on the PSC’s Clean Energy Standard, which has set a goal of the state achieving 50 percent renewable energy generation by 2030.
On May 24 at 7:07 p.m., troopers from SP Lowville were dispatched to State Route 177 in the town of Pinckney for a vehicle off the roadway.
The Public Service Commission held two in a month-long series of public hearings on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Clean Energy Standard (CES) in Oswego on Tuesday. It was the 11th hearing so far. The next one will be in Syracuse. The vast majority of speakers focused on saving the James A. FitzPatrick nuclear plant.
It was twenty-two years ago now when 18-year-old Heidi Allen disappeared early Easter Sunday morning in 1994 from the D&W convenience store that she worked for in New Haven. Despite the years that have passed, this particular case has recently caught national attention when it aired on Friday (May 20) as an episode on Dateline NBC entitled ‘The Informant.’ Dateline spent the past year interviewing all the key players in the case, including Heidi’s sister, Lisa Buske, District Attorney Greg Oakes, Sheriff Reuel Todd, defense attorney Lisa Peebles, the Thibodeau family, and even featured the only man ever convicted for Heidi’s disappearance, Gary Thibodeau as well as others. The one-hour episode summed up the mystery case of Heidi Allen and provided insight from all sides of the case. It is fitting, race fans say, that the “Dynamic Duo” have streets intersecting across from the iconic Oswego Speedway. Nolan Swift and Jim Shampine competed side by side many times at Oswego’s ‘Steel Palace.’ Now they will forever more be wheel to wheel at the speedway. Hailing from Syracuse, Swift was the first dominant force at Oswego Speedway driving his famous 10 pins.
OK, nobody actually sat down and shared a cup of coffee with Mayor Billy Barlow or Chief Tory DeCaire. But what they did share was plenty of productive dialogue. “This was a chance for Oswego residents to meet with Chief DeCaire and myself in a casual setting, ask questions and voice any concerns they might have,” the mayor told Oswego County Today. The next coffee meeting will take place on June 2.
Mayor Billy Barlow announced the creation of the Downtown Revitalization Committee whose primary task will ensure the city of Oswego competes for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The Downtown Revitalization Initiative program will invest $10 million in ten communities throughout the state.
