Come to the sixth annual Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium to hear local and international speakers talk about events and activities that shaped our community and the way of life of people living along the northern U.S. border during the war.
Marianne Angelillo, who speaks regularly about teen drivers and risky behaviors, will make the feature presentation for “Drive Safe, Live Safe,” a multifaceted evening of safety education hosted by University Police at SUNY Oswego at 6 p.m. March 29, in Marano Campus Center arena.
More than two dozen cuts loom in the tentative 2016-17 Oswego City School District budget, Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey told the school board Tuesday night. “We want to build a revenue based budget on the money that is coming into the district,” he said. The gap was originally $5.6 million. It shrunk to $4.9 million last month. Now it’s less than $1 million – but at a cost.
“Our April 10 event is taking shape nicely,” said volunteer event coordinator Dan Witmer, who is also the community service coordinator for the Oswego State Athletic Department. “But, we’re behind last year’s pace with the number of shavees registered at this point.”
Nestled in a bright, open room in Wilber Hall’s lower level, the CARE — Credit Accrual and Recovery for Everyone — program hosts 11 students in grades 9 to 12 who work one-on-one with a CiTi teacher, School of Education faculty members and students from around campus. The goal is to rekindle a fire for learning in the high schoolers that had dimmed due to impediments to success in a traditional setting.
The public hearing will take place at 7:10 p.m. on March 28 in the council chambers. Mayor William Barlow pointed out that, in the past, some of the public felt city government had “backroom deals and shady discussions” and “it wasn’t the most transparent government.” That is why he has recommended creation of an ethics board.
State Senator Patty Ritchie announced today (March 14) the state Senate has included $100 million in its new budget plan to help speed up proposed tax credits for renewable energy producers, a move that could help boost New York’s nuclear power industry and ultimately help save more than 600 jobs at Oswego County’s FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant.
Oswego County Fire Coordinator Donald Forbes reminds county residents of the annual statewide ban on all open burning which is in effect in New York State during the high fire-risk period of March 16 through May 14. The ban makes it illegal to use a burn barrel or open pits as a means for incinerating trash any time of the year.
Dozens of businesses and individuals have donated hundreds of items for the Youth Bureau’s upcoming event. Prizes include gift certificates, bikes, a diamond necklace and much more. The event is set for March 26 in West Park. A children’s parade will be at 10:30 a.m. and the hunt starts at 11 a.m.
The inaugural Oswego St. Patrick’s Day Parade was greeted bright blue skies, temperatures that flirted with 60 degrees and a large enthusiastic crowd on Saturday. Clusters of parade watchers lined West First Street toward Bridge Street. Some of them staked out prime viewing locations a few hours prior to the 1 p.m. start time of the parade. The crowd was even larger along Bridge Street.
