Katko, Chamber To Host Economic Development Roundtable

The Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, together with the office of US Rep. John Katko, announced that it will host monthly economic development meetings with the Oswego County business community. Katko will join the group for it inaugural meeting on Aug. 26. It will be held at the Riverside Banquet Room at the Quality Inn, 70 E. First St., at 3 p.m.

OFD Pulls 6 From Breakwall

Oswego Fire Department crews responded to the Oswego Harbor earlier this evening (Aug. 5) for people is distress on the breakwall. What appeared to be a calm day in Oswego turned dangerous, as 6 people walking on the breakwall began to get struck by waves approximately 100 yards south of the lighthouse. A witness on shore called 911, and emergency crews were dispatched at 4:41 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Search Under Way For New OHS Principal

The unexpected resignation of Oswego High School Principal Erin Noto has left the district scrambling to find a replacement prior to the start of the new school year. “It was unexpected and we are in the process of considering an interim for that position while we conduct a search for a new principal,” Superintendent Ben Halsey said at Tuesday night’s school board meeting. It was a “professional decision on Ms. Noto’s part,” he added.

EEE found in Oswego County

The Oswego County Health Department reported today (Aug. 4) that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus was found in three mosquito samples collected during routine testing near the village of Central Square and the Toad Harbor Swamp near West Monroe. The samples were collected July 27 and July 29 by the Oswego County Health Department and tested at the state health department’s Wadsworth Center Laboratories near Albany. The samples of mosquitoes are the first to test positive for the EEE virus in Oswego County this year.

Annual Tennis Carnival Set At Riley School Court

AmeriCorps members have offered the USTA Tennis Program at several sites around the county this summer. “The carnival is exactly our end of the year celebration! We invite all of our children that have attended our program to come relax, have fun, and play tennis,” said Shane Evans, supervisor of the USTA Tennis Program.

Shineman Foundation Donates Nearly $300,000 to CNY Not-for-Profits

Sixteen Central New York not-for-profit organizations, a large percentage of which are based in Oswego County, received grants from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation in its second grant round of 2015 at its July board meeting. Projects encompass a wide range of focus areas, including health and welfare for children, training and education, arts and culture, armed forces outreach, Neighborhood parks, and capital campaigns. These projects will benefit Oswego County on a number of fronts.

Volunteers Help Curb Spread of Water Chestnuts

This past Saturday, a group of 12 volunteers hand-pulled the invasive water chestnuts from the Battle Island area of the Oswego River. The establishment of water chestnut can result in large floating mats of vegetation that “clog” aquatic habitats and limit the penetration of sunlight into the water column, impeding the growth of native plants and ultimately disrupting the food web.
