Woman Searching For Her Sister

Jody Carotenuto of Pennsylvania is looking for her sister; and she’s turned her attention toward Central New York. “I’m looking for my sister, Amy, who was separated from my brother and I in 1971. I found out about her in 1993 when I found our birth parents. I was in total shock,” she said. “According to our birth mother, she told the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services to keep us together.”

Oswego Fire Department Urges Caution Near Fireworks

Independence Day, unfortunately, is one of the busiest days of the year for firefighters. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more fires are reported on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year and two out of five are fireworks-related incidents. The Oswego Fire Department advises that the best way to enjoy fireworks and prevent injury is to watch a professional show.

Gilpin’s Retirement Announced by Oswego Health

The Oswego Health Board of Directors announced today (June 30) that Ann C. Gilpin has chosen to pursue an early retirement as president and CEO, effective immediately. Gilpin made this decision, in consultation with the board, so that she may pursue personal and family matters. Operations at all Oswego Health locations will continue to be overseen by the current executive leadership.

Forum Shines Light On Heroin Epidemic

U.S. Congressman John Katko held a heroin summit Monday evening in Oswego City Hall. Community members had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the spike in local heroin use with a panel of parents, educators, healthcare providers, law enforcement officials and local advocates. “We want to bring awareness to this issue. I’m confident we did that tonight,” Katko said after the forum. There were some possible solutions presented. There is no magic bullet – but there are a lot of constructive things that we can do.”

DA: Alan Jones Denied Parole

The Oswego County District Attorney’s Office is pleased to announce that the NYS Department of Corrections has denied parole to Alan Jones, who is in state prison for causing the 2008 death of his 11-year-old step-sister, Erin Maxwell, DA Greg Oakes said today (June 29). An Oswego County jury convicted Alan Jones of Murder in the Second Degree in 2009, finding that he acted with depraved indifference to human life when he killed Erin.

OHS Class Of 2015 Urged To “Steam” Into Future

After 13 years of school, it took about 33 minutes Saturday to turn the OHS Class of 2015 into freshly minted graduates. In his second graduation address as superintendent, Ben Halsey encouraged the graduates to get steamed up. “212. The concept is quite simple. At 211 degrees, water is hot! At 212 degrees, water boils and with boiling water comes steam. And, with steam – you can power a train,” the superintendent explained. “One degree of difference, between hot water and powering a locomotive.” He urged the class of 2015 to always give that one more degree of effort in every thing they do.

Oswego County Tourism Office Reports Possible Advertising Scam

Dave Turner, director of the Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning, said his office is not currently soliciting advertising for its visitor guide, and that any legitimate advertisement solicitations for Oswego County’s official visitors guide would come directly from the tourism office staff and not through a third-party vendor.
