Oswego School District Eyes Creation Of Regional School

The Oswego City School District has entered into a partnership that it hopes will create a “regional school,” Superintendent Ben Halsey said Tuesday night. “We have partnered with eight other districts; the Oswego County BOCES, Cayuga Community College, as well as three major manufacturers (Novelis, Huhtamaki and the Fulton Boiler Company) to apply for a state grant that has been made available for the funding of a tech regional high school,” he said. If formed it would have a total of 50 students per grade level – spread throughout the entire county.

Stride To Save Lives Set Saturday

Following the suicide of her younger brother, a local woman has been spearheading an effort Not only to raise funds but just as importantly – raise awareness for suicide prevention. “Twelve years ago, I lost my brother to suicide. For the past five years, I have been working with a close group of others that have lost someone to suicide to plan a community walk to raise awareness. Last year alone, we had about 500 people participate,” said Jamie Leszcyznski is chair of the local event.

Yale University Project Compiles Old Photos of Oswego County

A new project from a team at Yale University has geographically organized a series of government photos from the 1930s and 1940s and are available for viewing online. The photos were taken nationwide by the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information, a New Deal project that compiled some of the most recognizable images of the Great Depression and World War II. There are 307 photos taken in Oswego County, one of the highest amounts in the state.

County To Distribute KI To Residents Of Emergency Planning Zone

Oswego County will hold two “KI Distribution Days” in Oswego and Mexico to distribute potassium iodide (KI) to people who live in the 10-mile emergency planning zone surrounding the nuclear power plants in Scriba. The county will distribute one 65mg tablet for every child weighing less than 150 pounds, and two 65mg tablets (totaling 130mg) for every adult in a household.

Probation Services Delayed Due to Power Outage

The Oswego County Probation Department is experiencing delays in service to customers as a result of a power outage that occurred at the Oswego County Public Safety Center Sept. 5. The Public Safety Center experienced an unusual power failure which caused the computer servers to go off-line, and the Probation Department has been unable to access information and data critical to day-to-day operations.

New York Sea Grant brochure alerts pet owners of potentially lethal toxins in NY waters

New York Sea Grant has announced the publication of Dogs and Harmful Algal Blooms. Harmful algal blooms, especially in the state’s fresh water, are overgrowths of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that cause water quality problems in lakes and ponds, including the occasional production of potent toxins. These toxins can poison people, household pets, waterfowl and livestock.
