Oswego County to participate in full-scale international security exercise

An upcoming exercise on Lake Ontario, scheduled for Thursday and Friday will bring together federal, state, local and Canadian law enforcement partners in a multi-agency exercise designed to prepare for and prevent cross-border terrorist and criminal activity. There are no known threats against the area, but boaters may notice an increased presence of law enforcement assets on the water. The Monroe County Emergency Management Office organized and Department of Homeland Security sponsored the exercise.

The Oswego city Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 149 E. Eighth St. this evening (Aug. 11). The fire was reported at 5:33 p.m. The first OFD units arrived within three minutes. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Schumer, Gillibrand Announce More Than $1 Million For Critical Water Infrastructure For Town Of Sandy Creek

U.S. senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday, Aug. 8, announced a $750,000 grant and a $308,000 loan for the town of Sandy Creek from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This federal funding will be used to update and expand the town’s critical water district #2 in order to replace water mains. This update will ensure the new water mains are compliant with regulations and meet supply and distribution standards.

Aerial spraying of a large portion of the target area in central Oswego County took place Friday evening, Aug. 8, to reduce the mosquito population and the threat of EEE. The entire target area encompasses approximately 22,775 acres in portions of the towns of Hastings, Mexico, New Haven, Palermo and Volney. U.S. senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Representative Dan Maffei today (Aug. 8) announced that the town of Volney has been awarded $532,000 in grant funding and a $1,428,000 loan through the Department of Agriculture Office of Rural Development. The town will use the funds for infrastructure projects to build new water mains bringing clean water to residents in the community.
