Oswego County Postpones Aerial Spraying Tonight

Aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area near the north shore of Oneida Lake is postponed tonight, Thursday, July 31, due to uncertain weather. The forecast indicates varied conditions, such as rain and wind speeds, that would hamper spraying efforts. Weather permitting, aerial spraying will take place tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 1 between 6 and 9 p.m.

DA: No Evidence Of Human Remains At Rice Road Site

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office have concluded their investigation at the property on Rice Road in the Town Of Mexico. While there was no reliable evidence indicating the property was related to the abduction of Heidi Allen, we conducted a thorough and exhaustive search of the property, the district attorney said. The Sheriff’s Department devoted considerable resources to this search and made every effort to discover and recover any remains that may have been there. There is no evidence that any human remains are or ever were at that site.

New York National Guard troops presented a session of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Citizen Preparedness Training Program at the SUNY Oswego Wednesday evening. The event was held in the Sheldon Hall ballroom. The message of the New York State Civilian Preparedness Corps’ “Aware Prepare” program is be aware of your surroundings and be prepared in case a disaster strikes.

Heidi Allen’s Sister Issues Statement on Behalf of Family

Heidi Allen’s sister, Lisa Buske, read the following statement today from the family regarding the developments in the 20-year-old case of the missing teen. They are still waiting for more information while authorities search the area where a lawyer said Heidi’s body may possibly be. I would like to take this opportunity to share with all of you on behalf of the family. Last week, with less than ten minute’s notice, we were thrust back to the emotional roller coaster of April 3, 1994. Our goal today is the same as it was then, to find Heidi and bring her home.

The Oswego County Health Department will conduct aerial spraying for mosquitoes between 6 and 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 31 or Friday, August 1. This map shows the targeted spray area. Residents in this area will be notified by the Oswego County Hyper-Reach reverse 911 program. They are advised to follow the precautions issued from the health department, including staying indoors and keeping all windows and doors closed for one hour after spraying.

Oswego County Finds More EEE and Plans Aerial Spraying on July 31 or Aug. 1

The Oswego County Health Department reports that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus has been found in four new mosquito samples collected recently. Three were taken from near the village of Central Square and a fourth from the town of West Monroe. Since the first two EEE positive mosquito samples were reported on July 22, the Oswego County Health Department has been making plans to conduct aerial spraying in the target area.

Nine Mile Point Hosts Community Information Night

Hundreds of people took part in Exelon Generation’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station’ open house event Tuesday evening at the Nuclear Learning Center. Employees and station leaders greeted residents, answered questions and educated everyone about how a nuclear power plant operates. Representatives from Operations, Engineering, Security and Emergency Preparedness and other plant departments set up informative displays to inform and educate the public.

Volunteers Continue Attack on Invasive Plants on August 2

Volunteers will gather once again to attack invasive plants on August 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is organized by Richard and Naneen Drosse to focus on the historic Battle Island and Guard Lock area of the Oswego River. Participants will meet at their home at 16 Hickory Grove Spur in Fulton to launch their canoes and kayaks.
