More than a dozen veterans and their families came from across New York State to enjoy a warm and sunny Father’s Day and participate in the second annual veterans’ charter boat fishing trip on Great Lake Ontario. The trip was organized by Jim “Doc” Goodness, creator of Volunteer Guides for Veterans, together with Danny Rodriquez, project coordinator for the Wounded Warrior Project and Capt. Tom Burke with Cold Steel Sportfishing.
The Oswego County Emergency Management Office has announced that the system of emergency notification sirens surrounding the three nuclear power plants at Nine Mile Point are scheduled to be tested Aug. 4 through 8, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The test is a portion of the regular testing program of the Oswego County Emergency Alert System.
The fireworks show lasted a breathtaking half hour and left the crowd cheering and whistling right to the last reverberating report.

Four Oswego County college students interested in environmental science careers are working with the New York Sea Grant Launch Steward program this summer to educate boaters about preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. They are demonstrating watercraft inspection at sites along the Lake Ontario shoreline from Sodus Bay to Henderson, the Oswego River, Little Salmon River, Salmon River, Sandy Creek, Stony Creek, and Oneida Lake from Bridgeport to Brewerton.
The Oswego County DA disputes a defense lawyer’s claim three other men kidnapped the teen nearl 20 years ago. Members of Heidi’s family has requested privacy as they are “still processing the information.”
Aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area near the north shore of Oneida Lake is postponed this weekend due to the weather forecast. The current model projections have indicated varied conditions including rain and wind speeds that would hamper efforts to conduct aerial spraying. Weather permitting, aerial spraying will take place in the middle of next week.
The 27th annual festival was greeted by mild temperatures and mostly clear skies – with hundreds of people, young and old, ready to celebrate. The fun continues throughout the weekend. Highlights include Friday’s Children’s Parade and Saturday’s fireworks display.
