During a tour of the Port of Oswego Aug.7, Rep. Dan Maffei (D-NY) and Rep. Richard Hanna (R-NY) announced a new effort to pass a strong Water Resources Development Act and bring critical support and infrastructure improvements to Central New York ports and the Great Lakes region.
With the 57th running of the Budweiser International Classic 200 on the horizon, Oswego Speedway released its 2013 camping guidelines and regulations for the week long festivities. The majority of past camping policies and regulations have stayed the same for 2013; however a few policies have been put in place for the overall safety of Speedway race fans.
Diana Trepkov was so moved by the story of Heidi Allen’s kidnapping that she created an updated age progression of Heidi, who would be 38 years old. It will be added to Heidi’s National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, NamUs, Doe Network, and Codeus accounts.
The Youth Bureau and Springboard Mural Committee approached the city councilors Monday night with two plans to improve the quality of life in the community. One is a unique free library project. The other is a novel way to clean up the graffiti along West Linear Park, behind the YMCA.
For the majority of students there will be no changes. However, there are numerous new students and those who have moved since the end of the last school year and they need to contact the district with any changes.
The Oswego County Alternatives to Incarceration Advisory Board voted Monday afternoon to move ahead with approving the county’s ATI plan. Deborah Meyer, director of the county’s Probation Department, chaired the meeting.
The H. Lee White Museum and Maritime Center celebrated Oswego’s first-ever “Lighthouse Weekend” in recognition of the West Pierhead Lighthouse. The event also commemorated the birthday of the US Coast Guard on Aug. 4 as well as the celebration of Lighthouse Day on Aug. 7 and the creation of a United States Postal stamp, which features an image of the Oswego Lighthouse.
Dozens of friends and family turn out to honor the Oswego Speedway legend. Two brand new signs, each with two different pictures of Jim Shampine’s famous race car, were unveiled at both ends of the road named in his honor. Pathfinder Bank, Romey Caruso (whose family formerly owned the Oswego Speedway for decades), the current speedway owners, the city and others all pitched in to help replace the signs, according to Mike D’Amico who spearheaded the project.
The signs were purchased through state funds sponsored by State Senator Patty Ritchie and are part of the “Fight the Bite” public education program to help raise awareness about West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. In all, 276 signs were provided to public health departments in Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Madison counties.
Kristi Eck, education program director at Say Yes to Education in Syracuse, will join the administration of SUNY Oswego at the start of the fall semester Aug. 26 as interim chief of staff for President Deborah F. Stanley.
