Breitbeck Park in Oswego was full of people Thursday for opening night of Harborfest. With a countdown led by Mayor Tom Gillen the festival was declared “open.”
No injuries were reported in a fire Wednesday in Oswego. The cause of the early afternoon house fire at 80 E. Mohawk St. is under investigation by the city of Oswego Cause and Origin Team. Numerous people inside the building exited on their own.
Veteran Oswego City School District Board of Education member James Tschudy has announced his resignation. Tschudy delivered his resignation notice to District Clerk William Foley and indicted that it would be effective on Wednesday morning, July 24.
The collaboration between the Fulton Family YMCA and the Oswego YMCA has a new executive director who has a record of strengthening the community. Greg Mills of Oswego will lead the two YMCAs starting July 29. To take the post, he will step down as a longtime board member of the Oswego YMCA and as assistant director of the city of Oswego Community Development office.

For many of us it seems like a lifetime ago when we were asked if we wanted to be seated at the smoking or non-smoking section in our local restaurant. For Zachary and Matthew Metott it was an actual lifetime ago. The Metott boys turn 10 years old this year and have never known a world where smoking was allowed in New York State restaurants.
The Common Council announced Monday night that the city had a memorandum of Agreement with the Municipal Employees Association for Management and Supervision of the City of Oswego. The previous deal expired Dec. 31, 2009.
The annual festival gets under way this week in the Port City. The mayor says residents should take pride in their city. “I think Harborfest is symbolic of what Oswego really is,” the mayor said. The Children’s Gala will kick off Harborfest events on Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Breitbeck Park.
The Central New York Community Foundation and the Richard S. Shineman Foundation partnered to award a $20,000 Strategic Partnership Grant to the H. Lee White Marine Museum. The Marine Museum will utilize the grant to assist with strategic planning, legal, accounting and promotional costs associated with the organization’s formal merger with the Oswego Maritime Foundation and the Oswego Maritime Alliance.
