Fulton Community Band and Dixieland Band to Perform at Memorial Day Salute

Paul Sherman, an art teacher at G. Ray Bodley High School and a performer of many
musical instruments, sent out a notice to all teachers hoping to form a faculty band. Due to lack of interest and available talent, Paul talked to Carol Fox about the possibility of forming a community band and thus there was a beginning.

Noise Ordinance Waiver Request Stymied in Committee

A local tavern owner’s request for a waiver of the noise ordinance created a din at Monday’s Planning and Development Committee meeting. Don Wahrendorf, representing The Sting, 49 W. Bridge St., requested the variance for the summer months for live acoustic music on the patio. The request failed to get a favorable recommendation.

Level 1 sex offender Arrested For Sex Abuse

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh reports that a Level 1 sex offender was arrested by detectives this morning (May 2) for Sex Abuse. William Howley, 51, of Central Square was arrested at 10:14 by Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division Abuse Persons Unit Detectives. He is accused of having sexual contact with three children under the age of 11 in the Town of Onondaga in 2006.

OMS Teachers Selected for Nationwide Educational Program

Suzanne Fox and Sarah Therrien were congratulated by Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist and Oswego Middle School Principal Mary Beth Fierro as the Oswego teachers prepared to leave for San Francisco to participate in the LearnZillion program.Recently, two Oswego Middle School teachers have become immersed in the “Core Curriculum” through LearnZillion Inc.  It is a social mission company committed to supporting the work of teachers and improving educational outcomes for all students. The web-based learning platform combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting. Each lesson highlights a “Common Core” standard, starting with math and English Language Arts in grades 3-9.

No Foolin’ – April 2013 was warmer than average

With all these daffodils popping up around,  could Spring be here to stay at last?The average temperature last month was 46.6 degrees. That is 1.9 degrees above average. It was also slightly wetter than normal. Local observer for the National Weather Service, Bill Gregway, admits he was a little surprised at how warm April 2013 turned out. “I thought it was a little chilly. But it was warmer,” he said. “The figures don’t lie.”
