Oswego’s Independence Celebration Seeks Former Parade Organizers

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Oswego Independence Parade in style, the organizers are requesting participants create floats similar to those from the past, which were decorated to showcase the parade theme. This year the theme is 50 Years of Family, Fun & Fireworks. Pictured is a photo of a parade entry by Hudson’s Dairy, circa early 1990s.One of the official signs of summer in Oswego is the Independence Celebration, which will be held on July 7 beginning with the 50th Anniversary Annual Independence Parade at 1 p.m. The theme for this very special event is “Fifty Years of Family, Fun and Fireworks!” The annual celebration began in 1963 and was originally organized by the Jaycees, a local service organization in the community at the time.

Dan Farfaglia of the 24th legislative district announces filing of lawsuit alleging illegal redistricting of Oswego CountyOn December 28, 2012, the Oswego County Legislature passed a reapportionment plan, which re-drew the boundaries of the county’s 25 legislative districts. This plan received opposition back in December and today (April 30), Legislator Dan Farfaglia announced he and fellow Democrat legislators Amy Tresidder and Doug Malone seek to have the redistricting plan declared illegal.

Cause of late-night Monday fire under investigation

UPDATE:  Tentative cause said to be heat generated from a torch or similar device while contractors were performing work on the front porch roof earlier in the evening.

There were no injuries reported in the fire late Monday at 85 E. Utica St., according to Jeff McCrobie, fire chief. The fire was noticed by one of the occupants of the home and reported at 10:49 p.m.

Hundreds Walk To Raise Funds, Awareness Of Autism

autism puzzleThe annual “Walk for Autism” drew approximately 300 people to Leighton Elementary School and the nearby Wilber Field on Saturday afternoon. Organizers admit the number was down from past years, but the participants were “just as dedicated as ever.” Besides acting as a fundraiser, the event, sponsored by the Oswego County Autism Task Force, also focused attention on the plight of Autism victims in Oswego County.
