An investigation by the Oswego County Drug Task Force and the Fulton City Police Department lead to the arrest of Chance Nathaniel Stewart, 34, of Fulton. The investigation into sales of heroin resulted in the issuance of an Oswego County superior warrant of arrest for Stewart.
Community members and city officials gathered today to pay their respects and express their sadness for the loss of one of Fulton’s leaders, Hugh MacKenzie. Mayor Ronald Woodward acknowledged that with Mr. MacKenzie’s passing last week Fulton lost “a decent and hard-working community leader.”
With the home heating season upon us, the Oswego Fire Department would like to remind residents of the importance of home heating safety. As you might expect, half of all home heating fires occur in December, January and February. Also, half of home heating fire deaths were caused by fires that started because portable heating equipment was placed too close to things that could burn.
The Port City officially lit up for the holidays on Saturday. Hundreds of people throughout the day enjoyed the first-ever Light Up, Oswego! The new community wide all-day event, welcomed the holiday season in Oswego at myriad locations. Events and activities began at 10 a.m. and continued until around 7:30 p.m. after Santa had greeted hundreds of youngsters in City Hall.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh reports that deputies have charged a Central Square man in connection with a robbery of a Salina restaurant that led police on a high-speed chase that ended in Oswego County. The suspect allegedly lead police on a high-speed chase, with his two young children in the van.
A coterie of Fulton school children will have cozy winter coats thanks to two local business owners and the generosity and kindness of the community. Joe Cortini, owner of Cortini Shoe Zipper Canvas Repair and Jeanne McManus, owner of Ontario Star Cleaners have teamed up with Fairgrieve Home and School to collect, clean, repair and distribute gently used coats, hats and mittens to students in the district.
Beginning Jan. 1, Oswego County solid waste transfer stations will be open four days a week. All of the transfer stations will continue to be open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Weekdays hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Oswego firefighters responded to a house fire late Wednesday night. The blaze at an apartment house on East Third Street reportedly left one person dead. “The call at 155 E. Third St. was reported at 10:14 p.m. with units arriving three minutes later to find the upstairs apartment fully involved with fire,”Chief Jeff McCrobie said.
During a recent Common Council meeting a 6th grader stepped to the podium during the public session to ask the mayor of Fulton about the ongoing efforts to clean up Lake Neatahwanta, and what young people can do to help. Brandon Grow, a 6th grader at Volney Elementary School, is a Boy Scout with Troop #780 in Hannibal, and he is working to earn the highest achievement in Scouts: the rank of Eagle.
Stormwater from Oswego’s west side sewer will be redirected to bioswales and tree plantings on State Route 48/ West First Street with a grant awarded by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for a Water Quality Improvement Program. The city of Oswego Community Development Office applied for the grant in December 2013. Joseph Martens, commissioner of New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, congratulated Mayor Tom Gillen for the project award of $330,000 for the $414,312 project last week.
