Oswego Councilor Braves The ‘Bucket Challenge’

Councilor Bill Barlow got drenched following Monday night’s council committee meetings. It was all for a good cause as the freshman councilor from the Fifth Ward took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Monday night. Not just any old bucket would do for the hardy councilor. He opted for the bucket of a front end loader filled with gallons of frosty water and several bags of ice.

Water Project Will Result In Outages At Times

During 2014, the Riley School water tank that supplies system pressure to the Oak Hill section of the eastside of Oswego City is being replaced by a new pump station. Part of that project will be to replace all the system check valves that maintain the water pressure at the top of Oak Hill. The work to replace those check valves will be done during the months of August and September, and will require periodic isolations of the water mains in the immediate areas where the replacements are being done.

Section Of East Utica Street To Close On Wednesday

As part of the Riley School Water Tank Replacement Project, on Wednesday, at 7 a.m., East Utica Street will be closed from East Eighth Street to East Ninth Street. Detours will be set up at East Fourth and East Tenth streets sending traffic to East Bridge Street. The street should be open Thursday at 5:00 p.m. to all traffic.

Greater Pulaski Fund Awards $5,000 In Local Grants

The Greater Pulaski Community Endowment Fund recently awarded $5,000 in grants to three Pulaski-area nonprofit organizations. The fund is a union of gifts contributed by the people of the Pulaski community that makes grants to support programs and projects of importance to the area. It is a component fund of the Central New York Community Foundation. Since its inception in 1992, the fund has provided $245,804 in grants to benefit the Pulaski community.

FCRC Awards Dredge Bid, Now Seeks $12.89 (per cubic yard)

The bid for $118,965.20 to begin dredging Lake Neatahwanta was awarded to an Illinois firm on Tuesday and the contract assures removal of the first 10,000 cubic yards of silt by mid-September. “Once the initial 10,000 cubic yards is dredged, any new money raised could be spent on a $12.89 per-cubic-yard basis for as long as (the contractor) is available or until the end of the season,” FCRC Director Joe Fiumara said.

Horse Dies of EEE in Oswego County

A horse in southern Oswego County has died of the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department reported today (Aug. 15). The horse had been stabled near an area known to harbor the EEE virus in Oswego and Onondaga counties, and was probably exposed to EEE in late July, prior to the aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor – Three Mile Bay Wild Management Area.
