Fourth Annual Symposium Focuses on Many Aspects of the War of 1812

The Oswego War of 1812 Symposium addresses the memory of war and its brave soldiers at the fourth annual event Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6. Pictured are the tombstones of two local War of 1812 heroes. Captain John Meacham (left) was a descendant of Captain Myles Standish, the famous military captain who arrived on the Mayflower, and brother of Col. Thomas Standish Meacham, organizer of “The Great Cheese” presentation to President Andrew Jackson in 1836. He recruited many of his neighbors to form a military company which was called upon to defend Sackets Harbor on two occasions and Oswego once. Private Silas Harmon (right) was best-known for organizing the famous 1823 Revolutionary War salute to surviving veterans in the town of Richland.Come to the fourth annual Oswego War of 1812 Symposium next weekend at the Lake Ontario Conference and Event Center on East First Street in Oswego. Hear true stories about the war along the New York-Canadian border from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, April 6. The event opens on Friday, April 4 with a student presentation competition, a meet-and-greet social with cash bar, and early registration from 6 to 9 p.m.

Natolis Shatters Guinness Strength, Fitness World Records to Raise Money for Family of Paralyzed Child.

Muscles bulged and hearts pounded as Bob Natoli led his son Bobby (the youngest ever Guinness Strength and Fitness World Record Holder from a chin-up record in 2008), and son-in-law David Bourdon in breaking an amazing six Guinness Fitness World Records in only one hour while Lance Patterson, Guinness Record Adjudicator Michael Empric, and a large crowd of supporters cheered them on.

Photo Credit: Kevin Richard Hotte.The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation marked the opening of the Seaway’s 56th navigation season today (March 28), with the transit of Algoma Central Corporation’s newly built ship, the Algoma Equinox, through Lock 3 of the Welland Canal. The vessel is the first of eight Equinox-class ships that are being purpose-built for trade in the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Oswego County Environmental Management Council Announces Earth Week Events

earth day 44 yearsIn September 1969, US Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration taking place in the spring of 1970, in support of the environment. Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated each year on April 22. Today, Earth Day has spread to numerous countries across the globe. Oswego County’s Earth Week is set April 25 to May 4.

Fulton Police to Participate in Operation Safe Stop

On April 3, the Fulton Police Department, along with law enforcement officers around the state, will participate in an Operation Safe Stop day. During “Safe Stop,” police officers are in marked patrol units enforcing the New York State Traffic Law which requires all vehicles to stop for stopped school busses with their red lights flashing.
