Volunteers Will Attack Invasive Plants at Port Ontario on July 13

Volunteers, including members of the Oswego County River Guides Association will hold their annual water chestnut hand-pull July 13 on the Salmon River Estuary.Volunteers, river guides, and members of local environmental organizations will gather July 13, at the Pine Grove Boat Launch near Selkirk Shores State Park for a community water chestnut pull on the Salmon River Estuary. Volunteers may ride in a driftboat with members of the Oswego County River Guides Association, or bring their own canoes and kayaks.

Regional Traveler Growth for Oswego County on the Rise

Tourism in Oswego County is on the move based on data from the 2012 report prepared by Tourism Economics, which shows that there has been a significant increase in traveler spending. The report is focused on the Thousand Islands Seaway Region which covers Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence counties. Oswego County increased traveler spending last year by 13.2 percent.

A large crowd lined Bridge Street on Sunday afternoon to take in the 2013 edition of Oswego’s Independence Celebration Parade.Crowds on both sides of the river were treated to a variety of music, classic cars and many other patriotic floats. Leading the way was the Oswego High School Marching Buccaneers.

Wilcox/Glenister family continues to fight EEE

The Maggie Sue Glenister Wilcox Foundation’s recent efforts raised more than $2,000. The family wants to make sure the public is educated about EEE, so that no other family has to go through what they have. The ultimate goal is to one day have a vaccine available to the general public. The deadly virus took the life of the foundation’s Maggie Sue Glenister Wilcox in the fall of 2011.
