Cars lined up at Bullhead Point in Fulton on Saturday morning to drop off everything from TVs to irons during Senator Patty Ritchie’s Electronics Recycling Event. “People started coming before it was open today,” Senator Ritchie told Oswego County Today. The event also doubled as a donation for United Way of Oswego County.
Oswego County health advocates have seen enough marketing from the tobacco industry. That’s the message they’ll be emphasizing today, May 31, World No Tobacco Day, along with partners around New York State and the world. According to the Surgeon General, tobacco industry marketing is a cause of youth tobacco use.
Today (May 31), U.S. senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the New Haven Volunteer Fire Corporation was awarded a $101,757 federal grant in Round 28 of the FY12 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
Beginning this weekend, the Thruway will use its electronic Variable Message Signs to increase driver awareness. Senator Ritchie had asked for the state Thruway Authority’s help in the wake of a series of horrific motorcycle crashes that claimed the lives of a number of local bikers. From June 1 to 8, the Thruway will flash the messages, “Watch for Motorcycles” and “Share the Road” on signs boards across its system.
The Richard S. Shineman Foundation announced it has awarded the SUNY Oswego Office of Business and Community Relations a $10,000 grant in support of the “Thrive” program. Thrive aims to be a community incubator which would cultivate potentially transformative ideas to positively change and grow Oswego County.
The departments’ reps said the grants will be used to purchase 121 new Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses. The congressman credited the professionals in the local departments for helping to secure the much-needed funding.
On Wednesday at 1:45 p.m., troopers responded to the area of 1121 County Route 57 in Schroeppel for a serious personal injury collision involving a Ford F350 pickup truck and a motorcycle. The investigation at the scene determined that a northbound motorcycle operated by Douglas M. West, of Baldwinsville, attempted to pass a northbound pickup truck operated by Rory G. Ingoldby, 12/24/68, of Phoenix.
