Budget Proposals Bring Us Closer to Finish Line with Positives for the Region

We are in the closing days before the state’s budget deadline and in many ways we have moved closer to a final budget. My goal in working with my colleagues is to reprioritize limited revenue, include real positive ideas for our state’s future, and show fiscal restraint and responsibility, so that the final product is a budget for which I can vote “Yes.”

Governor’s Budget A Starting Point; Job Creation, Retention Top Priority

Last Tuesday, the Governor released his proposed executive budget. This budget is a starting point which includes a number of proposals I think take us in the right direction, but still, there are others that concern me. Now is not the time to increase spending, as has been proposed. We need to rein in our spending to match revenues, while keeping an eye on job retention and job growth.

Ethics, Elections Reform a Start; Budget Moves to Front Burner

Everyone certainly recognizes the problems that exist and the need for tough ethics and election laws to address these issues and restore the people’s faith in our government. These changes will tighten up the laws that govern the relationships between lobbyists and elected officials as “consultants,” while also providing a long overdue means of enforcing violations in election law.

In Albany, We Need to Cut Spending, Pass Reforms, Work Together

Last week, the governor delivered his State of the State address in which he hit on some key points that align with what I hope we can achieve this year. Most pressing is the need to rebuild our economy to create jobs, cut spending, reject new taxes or fees, and find ways to meaningfully address rising property taxes.
