The Governor gave his annual State of the State address on Jan. 9 in Albany. This speech outlined the executive’s agenda. While there were many things I was glad to hear the Governor mention, the majority of our efforts should focus on creating jobs rather than gun control and campaign finance.
We hear a lot about using our assets at colleges and universities to help create jobs. I support efforts to see that our regional economy benefits from the intellectual capital and resources at our state’s higher education institutes.
I wanted to remind you of the signs of depression and help you be able to recognize its symptoms, and where to go for help. Also, managing a healthy diet is often a challenge during holiday times, especially for those with diabetes.
This year, I’m focused on getting more jobs to our state and our region. In addition, I’ll be working with local individuals and my colleagues in Albany to help pass more synthetic drug laws that protect our communities and help close the loopholes federal laws have left. I also look forward to seeing a more equitable school aid formula enacted.
One of my focuses as a lawmaker has been to improve insurance-related laws in New York. There are a number of bills I’d like to see pass that would improve the atmosphere in the insurance industry, crack down on insurance fraud and, ultimately, lower premiums in New York.
I was pleased to support this restoration in the budget. EPIC is the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage Program that is available to New York State residents aged 65 years or older whose incomes are under $35,000 for singles and $50,000 for couples.
The success of local wineries was part of a collaborative effort that began in 1976, when New York state passed the Farm Winery Act. This helped spur the growth of New York State wine production. Since then, more than 200 farm wineries have been created and the amount of wineries has tripled.
According to the National Retail Federation’s holiday consumer spending survey, 53% of Americans have already started their holiday shopping. With the busy shopping season upon us, it’s a good idea to remember this: Buy Local.
