Oswego State senior Sarah Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) has been named the SUNY Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 21, 2013. Thayer earned five of Oswego State’s six wins last week, including four wins over three different SUNYAC opponents to keep the Lakers’ playoff chances alive.
By completing the regular season sweep over Fredonia with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon, the Oswego State baseball team solidified a spot in the 2013 SUNYAC Tournament for the first time in more than a decade. The Lakers sit comfortably in third place in the conference standings behind Cortland and New Paltz with three conference games remaining at last-place Plattsburgh (9-20, 4-11) next weekend.
The Oswego State softball team (12-14, 7-7 SUNYAC) twice erased deficits in extra innings before pulling out a 12-inning, 7-6 win over Oneonta (8-22, 4-12 SUNYAC) to register a pivotal conference sweep on Sunday. The Lakers posted a 10-2 win in six innings in the opening game of the twinball.
Honoring its nine seniors before the game, the Oswego State baseball team made a huge playoff push with 7-5 and 10-5 victories over Fredonia. The Lakers solely occupy third place in the SUNYAC standings with four conference games left. With one more conference win and a loss by Oneonta, Oswego State clinches a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament for the first time since 2001.
A comeback fell short in game one. But, the Oswego State softball team (10-14, 5-7 SUNYAC) bounced back to defeat New Paltz (18-13, 9-5 SUNYAC), 9-1, in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Casey Balzer (Sr., Nassau, N.Y.) scored a career-high five games to lift the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team to a 15-10 victory over Oneonta on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at South Athletic Field. The Lakers also benefited from three goals and three assists from Nick Giampaolo (Jr., Setauket, N.Y.).
The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team (6-7, 3-3 SUNYAC) rallied behind the performance of goalie Nikki Greco (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) to pull out the win in a 5-4 affair over Brockport (10-5, 4-3) on a cold Saturday afternoon.
The members of the newest Oswego High School Athletic Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Buc Booster Club, will appear at halftime on Saturday at the girl’s varsity lacrosse game at Wilber Field.After the game the inductees will move to the induction ceremony at the new conference center on East First Street, across from the Press Box.
