CER Second Graders Say ‘Come In Houston’

OSWEGO, NY – “Readers Across America” is an appropriate title for students in a second grade classroom at the Charles E. Riley Elementary School.

Teacher Patty Tyrie noted, “The students are preparing for a live broadcast to a second grade classroom in Houston, Texas.”

CER second graders display the stories they will be reading to students at a Houston elementary school as they participate in a video conferencing reading program.

As part of the “Readers Around the Planet Program” the students will be reading to youngsters their same age nearly 2,000 miles away.

Tyrie explained, “Classrooms use interactive video to connect with other classrooms around the planet. We are very excited to be included in this program because learning about faraway places and appreciating diverse cultures is an important part of our curriculum.”

To prepare for the videoconference the second graders are presently studying maps, communities and their connection to the world, so this project fits right in to the curriculum.

Thus far two classrooms in Oswego and Houston have made a connection and are preparing a readers theater to share with each other, along with information about their state, hometown and school.

Second graders in Tyrie’s class include Rachel Alfano, Enrique Calvo, Alexendria Delfino, Blake Fidler, Molly Fitzgibbons, Jared Gardner, Miranda Gilbert, Emma Kozel, Katelyn Lagoe, Tristen Munger, Matthew Oldenburg, Deizmend Perez, Courtney Perras, Estie Proano, Rielly Rozyczcko, Faith Sams, Daniel Vaughn, Grace Verny-Rasmussen, Alana White, Danny Christensen, Colin Li and Jerome Sharpe.
