Child Struck By Vehicle Has Died


OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego City Police Department learned this morning (Sept. 4) that two-year-old Armondo Sciacca has died as a result of injuries he suffered in Wednesday’s incident in which he was struck by a motor vehicle on West Cayuga Street in the city of Oswego.

No tickets have been issued to the operator of the motor vehicle.

The Oswego City Police Department is continuing its investigation regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

From Thursday:  Oswego Police, who have been investigating a serious injury to a two-year-old boy, have located the vehicle which allegedly struck the toddler on West Cayuga Street.

Police have identified the operator of the vehicle to be 21-year-old Rick C. Fernandes of Utica, NY.

Based upon the accident reconstruction and police investigation it was determined that the operator of the vehicle had turned into the driveway of 136 W. Cayuga St. striking the child who was located near the curb of the roadway in front of a parked vehicle.

The investigation has determined that the operator was not aware of striking the child at the time of occurrence, and was unable to see the child due to the child’s positioning.

No tickets have been issued in the case.

The investigation is ongoing.

At this time, the child, Armondo Sciacca, is being listed in critical condition at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

From Wednesday: The Oswego City Police Department is currently investigating a serious injury to a toddler.

At approximate 3:48 p.m. today Oswego police officers and rescue personnel from the Oswego City Fire Department were dispatched to 136 W. Cayuga St. regarding a serious injury to a toddler.

The exact cause of the injury is uncertain at this time, but upon initial investigation, it appears as though the toddler may have been struck by a passing vehicle which left the scene prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.

There is no available vehicle description at this time.

The toddler is being air lifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Oswego Police are asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident to please call 343-1212.
