OSWEGO – The legacy of David Allan Sterio, a beloved musician, generous soul, and tireless advocate for the musical arts, will continue to resonate in the community through the establishment of a $1,000 annual music scholarship for an Oswego High School student pursuing music education or a career in music.
Sterio, a resident of Oswego Town, and a graduate of Oswego High School, passed away unexpectedly this past August 25, 2023. David made an indelible mark on the Oswego County musical landscape. As president of the Musicians Union of Oswego County, he dedicated his free time and boundless energy to enriching the region’s musical community, fostering a vibrant and supportive environment for musicians of all ages.
His musical talents were revered by many, serving as the principal clarinetist with the Oswego City Band, where his melodious tones enriched countless performances. Additionally, his saxophone melodies graced the stages of the Oswego Summer Stage Band and Stan Gosek’s Jazz Band, leaving audiences mesmerized by his virtuosity and passion for music.
Beyond his performances, David found joy in sharing his musical gifts with others, participating in numerous high school shows and church cantatas over the years. His dedication to his craft and his commitment to giving back to the community made him a beloved figure among musicians and audiences alike.
A graduate of Ithaca College with a degree in Music Education and Performance, David honed his skills and deepened his love for music. He followed in his father’s footsteps, playing an integral role in his father’s orchestra, the Nick Sterio Orchestra, carrying on his father’s legacy with pride and reverence.
In honor of David’s profound impact on the world of music and on the lives of those around him, the $1,000 annual David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship will support a deserving Oswego High School student who shares David’s passion for music and his dedication to serving the community through their musical talents.
Students are encouraged to visit the Oswego High School Guidance Office and complete an application prior to the April deadline.
