The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is recruiting AmeriCorps members to fill 20 positions this fall. The program will help schools, libraries and non-profit agencies throughout the county starting Sept. 1.

A federal grant awarded to the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau from the New York State Commission on National and Community Service supports the Oswego AmeriCorps program.

“AmeriCorps is a national service network that meets important needs in the community,” said Kathy Andolina, Oswego County AmeriCorps coordinator. “In Oswego County, AmeriCorps offers opportunities for adults of various ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local schools, agencies and nonprofit groups. Members provide mentoring, out of school activities or volunteer management.”

Members will serve at agencies across Oswego County, including the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Services, Catholic Charities’ Amigo Project, APW High School, Cleveland Elementary School, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County, Fulton CYO, Granby Elementary School, Lanigan Elementary School, Mexico Middle School, New Haven Elementary, Oswego Public Library, Oswego YMCA Advantage After-school Program, Palermo Elementary School, Reality Check, Safe Haven Museum and Education Center, Salvation Army in Oswego, and Success-By-6.

Members who complete 900 hours of service earn a Segal Education Award of $2,363 to pay for college, graduate school or to pay back qualified student loans. AmeriCorps members also receive a stipend during their term of service.

There is no upper age limit for AmeriCorps applicants. They must be at least 17 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and meet additional education and experience requirements for each specific position.
