2010 Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show A Successful Event

Moderator Kathleen MacPherson (center) awaits an answer from members of the Hannibal Middle School Team at the 19th annual Oswego County Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show held recently at the SUNY Oswego Extension Center in Phoenix. Pulaski and Mexico Schools each advanced to the state regional playoffs.

OSWEGO, New York – Pulaski and Mexico Middle Schools have advanced to the state regional playoffs, after winning first and second place respectively in the Oswego County Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show recently.

“We’re truly proud of all of the students who participated and we congratulate Pulaski and Mexico for advancing to the state regional playoffs this year,” said Cindy Albro, Prevention Director at Farnham Family Services.  “The annual show is an excellent way for Oswego County students to learn about drug and alcohol related topics in a fun atmosphere that allows them to participate and challenge themselves above and beyond traditional reading and test taking.”

According to Albro, next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the event.  The event, which is held at the SUNY Oswego Extension Center in Phoenix, is an educational prevention program that provides middle school students with skills and information to help them make important life decisions, in an exciting game show format.  In New York State, the Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show provides alcohol, drug, and tobacco education and information to more than 30,000 middle school students.

“We were very pleased with the area school districts’ participation and enthusiasm again this year,” said Albro, “and are so thankful to the support we continue to receive locally from our sponsors including: Entergy, Oswego County Stop-DWI, the Lifestyles Center at SUNY Oswego, Valti Graphics and Lupien’s Gifts and Engraving. This year marks Entergy’s 13th year providing support for this annual community event.”

The event is coordinated by Katie Backus of the Oswego County Department of Social Services Mental Hygiene Division, Farnham Family Services, the Oswego County Youth Bureau, Oswego County Health Department, SUNY LifeStyles Center, Oswego County Probation and the County of Oswego Council on Alcoholism & Addictions.  Additional support was provided by the Peer educators and staff from the Lifestyles Center at SUNY Oswego who assisted program coordinators the day of the event, and helped lead activities for the students.

Middle school students from across the county competed this year include Fulton Junior High School, Hannibal Junior High, Mexico Middle School, Emerson J. Dillon Middle School in Phoenix, Pulaski Junior High School, Sandy Creek Junior High and Trinity Catholic School in Oswego.
