OSWEGO, NY —  Saturday June 15, the Oswego Yacht Club hosted the Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta to benefit Friends of Hospice in Oswego County, (FOHOC). The event was a huge success for Friends of Hospice and was awesome to see a sailing regatta off the shore of Oswego, said Elena Twiss, executive director.

Racing started just after 10am with a Northeast wind of ten to fifteen knots that veered to North throughout the afternoon. Medium wave swells made  the conditions challenging. There were three divisions, and all were very competitive with each division completing three races.

The overall regatta champion was “Blaze” sailed by Brendon Benson from Fair Haven Yacht Club, second overall was “ Toto” sailed by Tom Doran of Oswego and in third was Hank Stuart from Rochester but sailing under the Oswego Yacht Club sailing “Blue Knight”. Herb Clark of Selkirk Yacht Club was the Recipient of the Comerford-VanDrake Sportsmanship Award.

In the white sail division, first was Herb Clark on “Porto” from Selkirk Yacht Club with two first place finishes, second was Clay Jackson from Sodus Bay Yacht Club on Merci and in third was Gary Phillips from SelkirkYacht Club sailing on One More.

Spinnaker Division One was won by “Blue Knight” with two first place finishes, second was “Moongator” sailed by Peter Quackenbush of Sodus Bay Yacht Club, and third was “Gator Aide” skippered by John Knapp of Sodus Bay Yacht Club. Spinnaker Two was won by “Blaze” with two first place finishes, in second place was “Toto”, and in third “Crusader” sailed by Dan Mather of Oswego Yacht Club.

After racing the Oswego Club hosted a Chicken BBQ Dinner and raffle drawings all to benefit Friends of Hospice in Oswego County.

FOHOC is a volunteer organization that provides financial and non-medical support to individuals, caregivers, friends and families during the end-of-life journey and supports them following their loss. The FOHOC is currently preparing for the 25th annual Camp Waves of Hope held in August each year for children who have experienced a loss. This camp combines therapeutic group counseling activities and fun summer camp games in order to leave children with additional coping skills for their grief and peer support that lasts throughout the year.
