OSWEGO – The Oswego Yacht Club will host the 32nd annual SAIL Oswego Labatt Blue regatta this weekend at the Oswego International Marina.
The event is one of the largest and most prestigious regattas of the season on Lake Ontario.
It is held during Oswego Harborfest, typically it attracts 25-30 sailboats and more than 200 participants.
Many of the original regatta organizers are still affiliated and active with the Oswego Yacht Club and the planning that takes place before this major regatta.
The regatta was started along side the first Harborfest then known as Oswego Fest and a NYS High School Superintendent’s Conference sponsored by Apple Computer.
During that first regatta N.Y.S. supers from around the state were part of the crew during the regatta.
Apple remained as the title sponsor for another two years.
Since that time Eagle Beverage Company of Oswego and Labatt Beer have been the regatta’s title sponsor with this year being their 30th anniversary as title sponsor.
The regatta is recognized as one of the premier sailing regattas on Eastern Lake Ontario and is a Tier 1 event for the Lake Yacht Racing Association’s “ Boat of The Year” award.
Local sponsors of the event are the OYC Annual All event sponsors, National Champion sponsor is Labatt/Eagle Beverage Company, Overall Regatta Champion is Burritt Motors , Gold Flag Band sponsor is the Fitzgibbons Agency and Breakfast Sponsor Price Chopper Supermarkets.
A new sponsor, IBEW Neca Local 43, has come on board this year.
Many previous SAIL Oswego Champions and competitors will be on hand to try to claim the Overall regatta trophy.
The best vantage points to view spectacular racing are Breitbeck Park, Fort Ontario and SUNY Oswego.
The first races will begin Friday at 10 a.m. and will continue on Saturday until 3 p.m.
The Oswego Yacht Club continues to be a vibrant force in Lake Ontario Sailing.
You do not have to own a boat to be a member of the club or to sign on as crew.
