OSWEGO – AmeriCorps member, Jade Nelson recently organized a community involvement project benefiting the Oswego Animal Shelter.

Nelson serves for AmeriCorps out of Oswego County Workforce New York in Fulton.

Nelson recruited more than 10 volunteers; her friends, family and co-workers at Canale’s Restaurant in Oswego.

She has worked at Canale’s for eight years, waitressing 4-6 nights a week.

The volunteers helped her make and donate goods to the local shelter.

She and the volunteers got together to make dog and cat toys, beds, and homemade treats to donate.

Nelson requested each volunteer bring an old T-shirt, sweater, blankets, pillow or sheets with them to create the beds and toys out of.

She also supplied tennis balls, fleece, stuffing and ingredients to make the treats.

The event was held on November 14 at Nelson’s home in Oswego.

She and the volunteers made more than 50 goods to donate to the animal shelters.

The items consist of dog and cat toys, beds, treats, and blankets.

Volunteers that could not make the event also donated dog beds, pillows and multiple boxes of extra towels and blankets.

AmeriCorps has four main goals the members abide by.

Getting things done, strengthening communities, encouraging responsibility, and expanding opportunity.

Nelson successfully reached each goal of AmeriCorps from her community involvement project.

She was able to directly serve and encourage new volunteers to “get things done” by coming together and helping the Oswego Animal Shelter.
