The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is currently accepting applications for AmeriCorps positions throughout the county. A nation-wide program, AmeriCorps serves community needs in local schools, agencies and non-profit groups.

“The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau received a federal grant from the New York State Commission on National and Community Service to support the Oswego AmeriCorps program,” said Kathy Andolina, Oswego County AmeriCorps coordinator. “This provides a great opportunity for us to fill program vacancies in schools and non-profit agencies all over the county.”

Agencies with open positions include the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Services Program (APPS) in Mexico; the Amigo Mentoring Project with Oswego County Catholic Charities; Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Clubs at Mexico, Oswego and Sandy Creek schools; the Safe Haven Museum in Oswego; the Salvation Army in Oswego; and the Success-by-6 Program in Fulton. Other site locations include schools in Fulton, Mexico, New Haven, Palermo and Parish.

Andolina added, “Applicant requirements vary in terms of experience and education. Minimum qualifications call for the applicant to be at least 17 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Additional conditions may be required for a specific position.”

All current openings are for a 900-hour term; however, each position is unique with its own schedules and responsibilities. Members may provide mentoring, facilitate one-on-one and peer group interactions, or coordinate events and after-school programs. Other assignments include helping students of all age levels develop their reading, writing and math skills.

The AmeriCorps program provides opportunities for members to network, gain valuable experience and serve their communities. Financial benefits include a living allowance of $6,094 as well as an education award of $2,362 that can be used for tuition costs or qualified student loans.

Application forms are available at http://oswegocounty.com/youth or by calling the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau at 349-3451 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3451. For more information, contact Kathy Andolina at [email protected].
