OSWEGO COUNTY – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, New York Sea Grant and Central New York (CNY) Boat Show join forces to announce that New York State Boater Safety Certification courses will be offered for adults as well as a youth at the 2024 CNY Boat Show scheduled Feb. 15 to 18 at the New York State (NYS) Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Boulevard, Syracuse, N.Y.

These courses certify individuals to legally operate a motorized boat or personal watercraft alone on New York waters and help boaters aged 10 years and older to comply with Brianna’s Law which requires every operator of a motorized watercraft, including personal watercraft, on New York waters to complete a state-approved boating safety course by 2025.

Adults and youth must successfully complete the eight-hour training course and same-day proctored exam to receive certification. Both courses are offered free of charge and all participants are asked to provide their own lunch. Pre-registration is required by calling New York Sea Grant’s Oswego office at 315-312-3042.

The adult-level course will be offered from 1 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16 in a conference room at the Expo Center at the NYS Fairgrounds. Each adult who pre-registers for the course will receive free admission to the 2024 CNY Boat Show.

The youth-level course is open to those aged 10 to 17 years from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 in a conference room at the Expo Center at the NYS Fairgrounds. Each youth who pre-registers for the course will receive three free admission passes to the 2024 CNY Boat Show.

This year’s state-certified boating safety instructors are U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 21 Past Commander Peter Wiles assisted by New York Sea Grant Great Lakes Recreation and Tourism Specialist John Cannaday and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 21 personnel.

The CNY Boat Show is the largest and longest-running boat show in New York State. It features more than 400 all-new models of power and sail boats, personal watercraft and docks in the Expo Center and Exhibit Center at the NYS Fairgrounds. The 2024 event will have a special section devoted to previously enjoyed boats and the new Marine Education Center will focus on marine industry career education.

Show hours are from 1 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 15 and 16; from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18.
