OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County STOP-DWI Coordinator David Hall announced that Oswego County police agencies and STOP-DWI coordinators will participate in a special effort to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving this Halloween season. The statewide STOP-DWI high visibility engagement campaign begins on Friday, Oct. 30 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 1.
“Halloween should be filled with fright for fun, not fear for drivers and their passengers,” said Hall. “Driving under the influence can turn a night of spooky celebrations into a real-life nightmare on the roads.”
As many people take their kids out trick-or-treating or host parties with their loved ones, law enforcement officers and STOP-DWI programs across New York State are working hard to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives.
“Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like this STOP-DWI campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving,” Hall said.
He also reminds people have a sober plan and download the mobile app ‘Have a Plan’ at www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp.
“With the app, you will always be able to find a safe ride home,” he added. “Impaired driving is completely preventable; all it takes is a little planning. We just want everyone to have a happy, and most importantly, safe Halloween.”
It’s also important for drivers to be alert for trick-or-treaters and other pedestrians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that people slow down and scan the road while driving and watch for trick-or-treaters in unexpected places, as children may be unaware of traffic and dart into the street suddenly. The Statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign also targets Thanksgiving, the December holiday season, Super Bowl weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, 420 Drug Day and the 100 Days of Summer with special emphasis on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day and end of summer.
