OSWEGO – The Oswego Players will hold open auditions for its May production of Ira Levin’s comedy-thriller “Deathtrap”on Friday, March 15th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 19th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Francis Marion Brown Theatre, Fort Ontario, in Oswego.
The hit dark comedy tells the story of playwright Sidney Bruhl, who has not had a hit show in years. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college – a thrillerthat Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it?
The production, under the direction of Inez Manor Parker, will run weekends May 10th to May 19th. No preparation is necessary;auditionees will read scenes from the script. All roles are open. The three male and two female cast of characters are as follows:
Sidney Bruhl – Male, age 50-60+. Polished, dashing, devious, clever, thinks he’s the smartest man in the room and wantspeople to know it; is “on stage” even when at home.
Clifford Anderson – Male, age 18-30. A student; very attractive, boyish and handsome at the same time; physically fit; he is very clever; knows he’s the smartest man in the room and can bide his time to display it; covers it with innocence, affection, andnaïveté.
Myra Bruhl – Female, age 40-60+. Sophisticated, upper-class, but embraces the country life; innocent, sweet, caring, emotional, nervous, even skittish, supportive of Sidney’s career and moods but grows some backbone when he crosses the line.
Helga ten Dorp – Female, age 30-60+. Psychic, wild, individual, Gypsy-like; in and out of her world and this world; knows she’s a celebrity and buys into the show of her gift; has a Dutch accent; is disarming and brave when faced with pain and violence.
Porter Milgrim – Male, age 30-60+. Professional, solid, observant. Sidney’s attorney. Rehearsals will begin in Mid-March.
