APW Begins Selection Of NHS Candidates

Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Junior/Senior High School has begun the selection process for students to be inducted into the APW Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Students in the junior and senior classes will be evaluated for membership by the Faculty Council which consists of five members of the school’s faculty.

Members of the Faculty Council are determined by APW Senior High Principal Michelle Crisafulli.

Students selected for the induction into the NHS must meet several requirements including academic excellence, as well as high standards of leadership, service and character.

Leadership is based on a student’s participation in community or school activities, or election to an office.

To meet the service requirements, students must have been active in service projects in the school or community.

Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty.

The first step in the selection process is to identify those juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 90 or above.

Students who meet the initial requirement are notified in writing of an informal meeting.

At the informal meeting, students will be given an informational packet to be completed and returned to the NHS advisors, Adam Wall or Becky Wagoner, by October 8.

Faculty members are given forms to fill out regarding each candidate’s service, leadership, and character. The NHS advisors compile the information and meet with the Faculty Council to select candidates for induction.

Only Faculty Council members may vote for prospective candidates; the NHS advisor does not vote.

The final selection is determined and the candidates are offered NHS membership.

An induction ceremony for new members will be held on November 10 in the school auditorium at 7 p.m.

The National Honor Society was established in 1921 to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. The APW Chapter of NHS was established in 1960.
