APW Student Government Host Drive-Thru Senior Citizen’s Thanksgiving Dinner

Volunteers organize Thanksgiving dinners.

ALTMAR-PARISH-WILLIAMSTOWN – The APW Student Government members did not want to pass up on celebrating our community’s Senior Citizens just because we are in a Global Pandemic.

They rallied together, at first over Zoom, and brainstormed just how they would accomplish the Traditional Thanksgiving Senior Citizens Dinner this year.

Our future leaders showed up with their problem solving and organizational skills to pull off APWs first ever – Drive Thru Senior Citizen’s Thanksgiving Dinner. The dinners include turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash, corn, applesauce, cranberry sauce, pickles, olives, rolls  with butter, and pie choice for dessert (pumpkin, apple, pecan, chocolate or lemon meringue). There is also a Thanksgiving card included along with a special handmade Thanksgiving picture from some of our elementary students.

Finally, the students know that one of the favorite parts of their usual dining experience is the chance to win fabulous door prizes. Our compassionate student government team decided to include a fabulous door prize in every one of the 135 dinners!

135 people made reservations for their meals. Students, faculty, staff, community members, local businesses and organizations donated food, money and time. A big shout out to the 15 faculty and staff members who volunteered their time to assemble and distribute the meals when we announced that the students would be unable to do their part due to the district pivoting to 100% remote on Wednesday (yes! one day before the work had to be done!).

Also much thanks to our food service ladies – who gracefully change plans when we needed them to. Students couldn’t help with the cooking and slicing of the turkey – mashing of potatoes, etc. Our food service staff took over, without complaint and got the job done.
