OSWEGO COUNTY – May is National Foster Care Month, providing the perfect opportunity to learn about foster care and the positive impact you can have on a child’s life. The Oswego County Department of Social Services (DSS) offers monthly virtual foster and adoptive parenting meetings. The next one is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 6.

National Foster Care Month is celebrated every May to raise awareness of foster care and the continuous need for foster parents in all communities. It also recognizes those who help children and youth find permanent homes, including foster parents, family members, volunteers and child welfare professionals.

“Being a foster parent is an essential role in our community,” DSS Commissioner Stacy Alvord said. “Although the responsibility of caring for someone else’s child may initially seem overwhelming, there are support services available every step of the way. Fostering truly is a rewarding experience, and I encourage anyone who may be interested in becoming a foster parent to reach out to us for more information.”

The next foster and adoptive parenting meeting will be held virtually from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 6. Those who would like to participate and help local children and teens find a forever family can contact Patricia Pennock by Monday, May 1 to sign up for the meeting.

Call 315-963-5382 or email [email protected] and provide an email address to register. Login information will be provided to those who pre-register. If no responses are received, the meeting will be cancelled.

Foster Life, a group recently formed by local foster mothers, provides support to current foster families. The group hopes to create teams to assist foster families by helping them with babysitting, bringing them meals, helping with household chores and driving children to appointments, activities and visits. For more information on the group or to participate, contact [email protected].

With dozens of local children and teens in need of love and care, DSS encourages residents to help raise awareness about this critical issue and share this information with interested friends and family members. Residents can start to make a difference in the life of a young person by participating in this valuable program.
