Bishop Cunningham Declares Year of the Family

SYRACUSE, NY – Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, has introduced a new document entitled Enriching the Church: Pastoral Letter on “The Role of the Family in the Life of the Church of Syracuse and Beyond.”

Building upon Pope Francis’ post synodal apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, it is the hope of Bishop Cunningham that “our parishes will develop a renewed focus on families and offer tangible ways to help them strengthen their faith lives through prayer and worship, formation, community and service.”

“There is a real need to renew our relationship with families, no matter their make-up, and equip them with ways to live out our Catholic beliefs joyfully,” Bishop Cunningham said.

In order to call attention to this focus on family, Bishop Cunningham has declared a Year of the Family in the diocese to commence the first week of Advent, Sunday December 3, 2017 and conclude on the Feast of Christ the King, Sunday, November 25, 2018.

“During this year, I ask that together we reach out to parents and families in new and different ways that will result in a growing feeling of being at home in the Church and a burning desire to know, live and share the Catholic faith,” he said.

Parishes across the seven-county diocese received copies of the pastoral letter, and the diocesan Office of Communications has created a yearlong social media campaign.

Weekly video messages from Bishop Cunningham will be featured on the Diocese of Syracuse Facebook page; additionally, people can sign up to receive weekly Year of the Family email messages by visiting syracusediocese.org and clicking on the ‘Sign Up’ tab.
