Oswego County BOCES Culinary Arts student Miranda Parsons displays her skills while folding pastries into intricate designs, hoping to impress the judges at the school's second annual Culinary Salon Competition.

Oswego County BOCES (OCB) held their second annual Culinary Salon on November 8, 2008 at the B. Ramer Technical Career Center.  Students in the Culinary Arts Program were given the opportunity to invite their internship mentors and OCB staff members to act as judges as they faced off in an exciting culinary competition. The Culinary Salon aims to highlight the training that students have received so far this semester in the classroom and through various internship sites in Oswego County Food Service establishments.

Participants were divided into six teams. Each team was given a culinary category to present, such as quick breads, light luncheon fare, side orders and desserts that were available for judges to taste. The delectable samples drew a large crowd of willing judges, who were eager to see what the students were capable of. Among the judges’ favorites were handmade ricotta and mozzarella cheese, butternut squash soup, black bean chocolate fudge, grilled hamlet sandwiches, wheat pizza, and fruit smoothies. Individuals were able to display their professionalism and presentation skills as well as their culinary creations, as the judges also took these aspects into account when picking their favorites.

In addition, the Signature Club also held a bake sale fundraiser during the event to raise money for Culinary Arts students that will be competing in the SKILLS USA competition in February.
