Career and Technical Education students from Oswego County BOCES joined well over 2,000 students from other BOCES, technical career centers and high schools for the 47th Annual New York State Leadership and SkillsUSA Championships.

The conference was held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse and gave OCB students an opportunity to showcase their skills in a variety of technical, trade and leadership contests.
Business and industry professionals judged the roughly 80 contests that took place at the conference and seven OCB students where recognized for outstanding achievement.
Earning first place honors and gold medals were: Construction Technology student Robert Miller, from the Fulton City School District for his participation in the Carpentry contest; Early Childhood Education student Christine Canova, from the Oswego City School District for her participation in the Early Childhood Education contest; and Outdoor Power Equipment Technology student Jordan Barlow, from the Pulaski Academy and Central School District for his participation in the Small Engine Service contest.
Earning second place, silver medal honors at the conference was Computer Systems and Networking – CISCO student Nelson Leach, from the Fulton City School District for his participation in the Computer Maintenance Technology contest; and Logan Angelina, an Oswego City School District student in the Digital Media Technology class and a participant in the Technology Computer Applications contest.

Third place, bronze medal finishers included: Central Square Central School District students Corinne Congden and Cheyenne Hier. Congden participated in the Floral Design contest at the conference and is a student in Floral Design and Greenhouse Technology at OCB. Hier’s bronze medal was awarded to her for her excellence in the Photography contest at the conference. Hier is a student in the Digital Medial Technology program at OCB.
Also earning honors at the state-wide conference was Computer Systems and Networking – A+ student Eric Hulbert, from the Mexico Academy and Central School District. Hulbert was selected to be a member of the New York State National Delegate Team and will travel to the National Leadership and Skills Conference in June. As a delegate, Hulbert will represent New York State, serve as a student advisor throughout the conference, and participate in the election of the national SkillsUSA officers.
2013 marks the 49th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and will feature more than 5,000 outstanding career and technical education students competing in nearly 100 different competitions. Students will prove their expertise in technical, trade and leadership fields, competing against state contest-winners from across the country and the clock.
Representing New York State at this conference will be OCB state conference first place champions Robert Miller and Christine Canova.
According to the SkillsUSA website, more than 15,000 people – including students, teachers and business partners – are expected to participate in the week-long event scheduled for June 24 – 28 in Kansas City.
