“Whether you’re a player or a fan, this family friendly tournament will be a great afternoon of basketball. The tournament will include separate brackets of eight teams; ages 16 – 30 and 30 and over, as well as a shoot-out for youth ages 5 – 7, 8 – 10, 11 – 12, and 13- 15,” he explained.

A prize will be awarded to the winner of each bracket and all youth participating in the shoot-out will receive an award.

He added that the tournament is open to both men and women as co-ed teams are welcome.

Catholic Charities’ CYO Rock the Rim Basketball Tournament will serve as a fundraiser for the CYO Program.

One of the agencies most popular programs, CYO provides a safe, well supervised, friendly environment that provides area youth with a variety of programs that promote positive development including; an after school program, a mentoring program, summer recreation, and a Saturday drop in program that offers youth the opportunity for healthy interaction with their peers.

Smiley said that the CYO Program has served thousands of youth over the years and that today’s participants have the same enthusiasm for the program as those who enjoyed the program years ago.

“It’s interesting to talk with those who participated in the CYO program when they were younger. They have fond memories of their time here at CYO and, as adults, have an even greater appreciation for the program as they look back on how it made a difference in their lives. I know many of them still enjoy playing basketball and I hope to see plenty of past CYO members playing in this tournament,” he said.

While the program has felt the impact of the current economy and has experienced significant budget cuts, it continues to serve area youth.

“We are doing our best to serve more with less, but it is a challenge. The proceeds from our Rock The Rim Basketball Tournament will help us not only continue our core programs but also allow us offer special events such as our movie days, and our many holiday themed activities. We are looking forward to a great event with a full slate of teams, plenty of participants in our youth shoot-out and the stands filled with community members cheering on the players and showing their support for the CYO Program,” added Smiley.

Registration fee is $150 per team with a maximum of 8 players per team, and includes a commemorative T-shirt for each team member.

For a $1 donation, participants in the youth shoot-out will receive 5 shots.
