Catholic Charities to offer Workshop for Parents of Teens

Program Director, Kevin Slimmer and Parent Educator, Cindy Morabito review materials to be used during the upcoming Active Parenting for Teens workshop.  The workshop, which is free and open to the public, is designed specifically to educate parents on how to properly prepare their teenagers so that they will develop into productive young adults. The Parent Education Program at Catholic Charities of Oswego County will be offering an informative workshop that will be of interest to all parents and/or guardians of teenagers.

Entitled Active Parenting for Teens, the six-day, fifteen-hour workshop is designed specifically to educate parents on how to properly prepare their teenagers so that they will develop into productive young adults.

Program Director, Kevin Slimmer, explains. “The purpose of the Active Parenting for Teens workshop is to support the development of human potential through family structure by providing parents with the information and skills needed to prepare children who will develop the qualities necessary for thriving in a democratic society; cooperation, courage, and responsibility. This workshop will be very beneficial for parents and guardians of children ages 10 through 18.”

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

– Developing effective encouragement skills

– Communication skills that win cooperation

– How to teach your child to respect you

– The three keys to your child’s self-esteem

– Discipline methods that work

– How to avoid anger

– Teaching you child responsibility

– How to effectively handle the challenges of sex, drugs, self-esteem, obedience, courage and respect.

The Active Parenting for Teens workshop will be held on six consecutive Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., beginning December 9th and continuing through January 13th at the Central Square Middle School. Parent Educator, Cindy Morabito and Intensive Parent Educator, Joli McGrath will facilitate the workshop.
