CENTRAL SQUARE – Following is an updated response from CSSD Superintendent Thomas Colabufo concerning today’s social media safety concern. The original message is posted below:

February 16, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians:
Dismissal at the middle and high school went smoothly today, and we greatly appreciate your patience today.

As a result of our staggered dismissal at our middle and high school, the elementary students will be getting home approximately 20-30 minutes later than normal. As we stated in the previous alert, someone called our middle school and high school at approximately 1:30 p.m. stating that they saw something on Snapchat (a social media site) where something was
going to happen at dismissal at our high school.

Since this person called the middle school and high school, we exercised an abundance of caution to make sure that the high school and the middle
school had a large police presence at dismissal time and that went smoothly.

We will also have a police presence at the Millard Hawk Elementary School dismissal because that building is located next to the high school.

Unfortunately, there has been an increase in the number of hoaxes on social media directed at school districts, so please use this as an opportunity to have a conversation with your children about the severity of posting things on social media that are not true to cause concern and to
disrupt the educational program.

If and when we identify the person who was responsible for posting the false information on social media, we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law and if it is a student, they will be expelled from school.

We would like to thank our administration, our special patrol officers, the Central Square Village Police Chief, the troopers and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department for their help this afternoon.

We were delighted with their response time, and we are very grateful to all of them in assisting us in our number one priority, which is the safety of our students and staff. We are still following our protocols, and there will be no after school activities in our high school or middle school today.

If anyone has any information regarding the identification of anyone involved in today’s incident, please contact your child’s principal. Thank you and have a great night.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Colabufo
Superintendent

Following is a letter from CSSD Superintendent Thomas Colabufo concerning a safety concern posted on social media today, February 16:

February 16, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,
At approximately 1:30 p.m., administration was made aware of a safety concern posted on social media.

Our Special Patrol Officers reacted immediately and worked with administration following our safety protocols. Both the Middle and High School were put in a hold in place while investigations to the
allegations are taking place.

Additional police presence will be at the Middle and High School during
dismissal. Dismissal will be staggered to eliminate large crowds.

Since Millard Hawk Elementary is located on the main campus, we included that building in our safety protocols. Our other schools are running normally.

This is out of an abundance of caution. When more information becomes available, we will share that information with all parents and guardians.

Even though this is likely a hoax based on the information law
enforcement was able to quickly ascertain, we will still follow all of our safety protocols to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

Again, out of an abundance of caution, we have canceled after school activities for today at the high school and the middle school as this investigation continues.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Colabufo
Superintendent
