Characters Support Literacy Event

OSWEGO, NY – Share your favorite storybook characters at the Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County “Feed the Need to Read” event.

LVOC, in partnership with Oswego County BOCES, Success by Six, local book stores and the Oswego County libraries, will be raising literacy awareness throughout the month of September.

Starting off the awareness activities will be the “Feed the Need to Read” literacy event, which will be held on Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Fort Ontario, Oswego.

The Oswego Lions Club’s third annual Child Safety Day and “Art in the Sky” Kite Festival will also be held at the fort that day.

Characters that will join children at the event include Cat in the Hat, Novelis Can Man, Mother Goose and ORC, the Trashasaurus.

You can hear the story about recycling along with ORC at 12:30 p.m.

Also joining us this year will be “Charlie the Reading Dog” and his friend, Nancy Evale, who will share their love of reading at 1 p.m.

Even more guest readers will be featured throughout the day.

For a fee of $5, families (up to two adults) need to register for the event and children must read two books to enter.

T-shirts and goodie bags will be available for the first 100 registrants.

Children participating in their local library’s Summer Reading program will be entered into a drawing for special prizes.

A 1K Family Fun Walk will kick off the day from 11 a.m. – noon.

Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite storybook characters as there will be best costume prizes awarded at the end of the walk.

Participants at the event will be eligible for prize drawings by visiting all vendor tables along the walk and at the literacy tent.

The event is for the whole family and various activities will be presented from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The Art Association of Oswego will be providing literacy-related craft projects.

Refreshments will be available for sale.

The month of September is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of literacy throughout the lifespan and with all of our help we can become a more literate community.
