OSWEGO COUNTY – CiTi BOCES is proud to announce the launch of the Inclusive Play Lending Library, an innovative initiative designed to bring the joy, benefits and opportunities of accessible play to students with multiple disabilities throughout Oswego County. The project was funded through the generous support of the Richard S. Shineman Foundation.
Led by Jaclyn Canale, CiTi Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired, the library features a diverse collection of switch-adapted toys and functional items that promote engagement, independence and skill development. These specialized toys are modified to allow children with limited motor abilities to activate and control them independently, empowering students to explore, learn and play in ways that may otherwise be inaccessible.
Educators and therapists across Oswego County can browse the library’s online catalog and request items based on the unique interests and needs of their students. The lending library offers a flexible and cost-effective way for schools and service providers to access adaptive equipment while introducing students to new opportunities for play and learning.
The library also creates meaningful vocational learning opportunities for students enrolled in CiTi’s Project Explore program. As part of their work-based learning experience, Project Explore students will manage the library’s day-to-day operations, including inventory management, quality assurance checks, order fulfillment and packaging materials for distribution.
This collaborative model not only expands access to inclusive play resources for students with disabilities but also provides Project Explore students with valuable hands-on job training. Through their involvement, students develop workplace skills, responsibility and confidence that support future independence and employment success.
The Inclusive Play Lending Library reflects CiTi BOCES’ commitment to creating equitable opportunities for all learners while fostering innovative programs that support both student development and community collaboration.
